I saw this suggestion on the topic of a Dier backup and figured it could be worth discussing on here. What about Ben Mee?

Mee is currently a free agent. He's been the Burnley captain for 10+ years, so he adds leadership to the defence just like Dier. He's also good in the air, 87th percentile in percentage of aerials won among the top five european leagues. On top of this he is homegrown which is good since we have free slots for homegrown players.

He wouldn't be an upgrade on Dier. But should be a reliable veteran backup who would probably be happy to come in and play that role and get a nice last payday.

Too Ryan Nelson-y for my liking.

Where did I say I'd start anyone there?
I said any of them can drop back into that system. It's called fluidity and something most decent teams are perfectly capable of. We have Conte as coach, not AVB telling players off for moving out of their 5mx5m pitch zone.

Maddison IS a proper AM. But he's not much else. So if we're not playing 352 he isn't gonna be on the pitch. Whereas having players who can seamlessly operate both positions means we can do both with no personnel changes required.
I really can't see Conte deviating from 343 from the start of games. I can only really see him changing mid match if it's not working.

Okay, well it wasn't clear what you said in your post, it said we shouldn't sign an AM when one of our forward line could drop back there.

Anyway 3-5-2 is more Conte's formation if he does have the players to play it, but he'll probably have a plan A, B, C with the right squad.

For clarity - what I'm saying, is that it isn't critical if we do or don't sign a player who only operates in that role.
Because they won't start there all the time and can't do much else. The role is redundant the way we play. The only way to bring them in is a) change the way we play and b) drop one of the front 3 to accommodate said specialist player.

Well with potentially upto 70+ games i think there will be plenty to go around, time will tell.....

He can play off the right, and false number 9. I hate James Maddison he scores against us way to often.

This is nonsense. N'Jie and Nkoudou didn't fail because of a lack of physicality or intensity, they just weren't good enough for a team at the top end of the PL, they weren't good enough for teams at the top of Ligue 1 either. They were young punts that didn't pan out like Clarke or Rodon.

By your logic we've learned from Kante that that Ligue1 is vastly superior to the PL because he never managed to win Ligue1 but pissed the PL twice. He's also able to play with more intensity and physicality than most PL players.

Did we learn from signing people like Sissoko and Doherty from the PL that the PL is shit?

There are plenty of players from Ligue1 (and other leagues) who have been great allover Europe, including in (and winning) the PL.

Kulesevski was failing at Juve in Serie A, yet found it piss easy to score and assist in the PL. What have we learned from this, that Serie A is tougher than the PL?

Your theory is nonsense. It's just about finding the right players. Wherever you are looking, and Ligue 1 doesn't lack physicality or intensity - it just lacks finesse, because it all gets exported pretty quickly to the rest of Europe.

Your first paras are not worth commenting on as you've stretched your logic (not mine despite your comments to the contrary) beyond breaking point

Moving onto Kulusevski, he did very well on loan at Parma in Serie A in terms of goals and assists (13 goals and 9 assists) when he was 20 (ie pretty young) and won Serie A Best Young Player.

When he returned to his loaning club Juventus he was doing ok until Allegri became coach and things then went went down hill for him, possibly as he didn't fit Allegri's preferred system.

Spurs probably loaned him on the basis of his Parma form, so the risk perceived as low as he had already shown what he could do - and so far under Conte he has returned to that form.

You clearly watch a lot of French league - and indeed were a huge cheerleader for Ndombele at Lyon. However the issue you want to remember is that the intensity of play in PL is so much greater than the French league, so unless the player can step up he'll fail - as shown by Ndombele.

I think the same can be said of the rest of Europe's 1st & 2nd tier leagues leagues too.....

Filtering by league is pretty much a non-starter..... Successful scouting needs to look deeper than that.

That’s fact free nonsense.

Woolwich had bigger revenue than spurs throughout the 00s and had won the league and reached a champions league final. And they had world class players. They had FAR more revenue and FAR higher reputation than us. We only overtook Woolwich for revenue 2 years ago.

Liverpool won a champions league and reached another final but in any case had FAR higher revenue than us.

In the 00s we were at best the 5th most attractive team. AT BEST.

Oh and Man City for the past decade.

Were still only the 5th biggest club by revenue so finishing in the CL spots requires a richer and more attractive team to fuck up.

And we’re only in the position we’re in revenue wise because of the amazing off the field work Levy has overseen. Otherwise we’d still be a long way behind… just like the other clubs who were similar in size in the 00s still are to this day.
What a post.

bus-conductor bus-conductor Suggestions we're after the little genius known as Nabil Fekir. I was surprised to see he's still only 28 years old, and the rumoured chronic injury problem (knee?) doesn't seem to have stopped him playing a lot of games for Betis.

Fekir would definitely bring creativity to our attacking options. Maybe we can send GLC the other way.

Think it's 62.
38 PL games
6 CL group games
7 knockout games inc final
6 FA Cup
5 League Cup

Still a lot, but a way off 70+

Yep closer to 60 games.

But with the season shorter by a month (season starts a week earlier, 6 week world cup, season finishes a week later, so net month shorter) game frequency is higher than any previous season, so players get less risk = benefit to larger squad and higher player rotation.
