Interesting.

Taking the above at face value, his lack of defensive mindset may not directly lead to a goal, but one / two plays thereafter does.

I feel that he does not have that automatic defender attribute to deal with a situation without thinking about it. He takes 2 secs to think about and deal with a situation, whereas an out and out defender does the same / similar but automatically and in half the time . Fine margins, and all that.
You should/could apply that same logic to the centre forward for not putting pressure on the oppo CB or Keeper when the build up started. How far back do you want to go? It’s only fair.

Dier has made just 7 mistakes across 9 seasons that have led to a goal.

The rest of your post I agree with.
Interesting stat. There must have been many more that didn't lead immediately to a goal, as it feels like a regular occurrence. I do like Dier but he does have a tendency to come unstuck against high level opposition. His mistakes yesterday would put me off if I was Gareth Southgate.

Yep, fair point. It’s a team game after all.

I just feel (not based on stats) that he doesn’t give us the strength / positiveness that a truly good side requires. To build play from the back requires resoluteness that he does not have, imo. 👍

It’s not 2006 anymore. These dinosaurs like Jose and Conte are yesterday’s managers.
Conte is still one of the world's best. People have short memories. He showed at the back end of last season that he can get us playing attractive attacking football. He had us close to top of the goalscoring charts. And he's the reason Kane is still here and motivated.

He's had obvious headwinds this season - injuries to the likes of Kulu and Romero, poor form from Son, new players not hitting the ground running. And yet we're still 4th, ahead of Chelsea, Utd, Liverpool.

The good thing is, we already have some real top players in key positions... Son, Kane, Kulu, Benta, Romero, Perisic. Much harder to find that level talent, than to find upgrades for the likes of Emerson and Dier or backup for Kulu. So the chances are Paratici can continue to improve the squad over the coming windows - even without finding world class players.

In the meantime, it could be a lot worse. In fact under most managers facing these challenges it no doubt would be.

He literally leads that back line.

And in the last few games after losing Romero you can see his versatility since ply on the right. Against Bournemouth and yesterday in 2nd half most of our creative build up started with him. Centre CB and RCB are two very different roles and has shown he can play both.

He makes less mistakes than Romero (who I think is mustard and over all a better player than Dier) but he miss times loads of his challenges, over committing on many others and is not that great in the air (all accepted by me for the other qualities he brings to the game and taking his age into account).

But you don’t see him pinging accurate 40yrd diagonal balls as Dier has done when playing RCB. I would also shit myself if Romero was playing as the centre CB (but this might be unfair because I’m not allowing him chance to prove that he can adapt, and assuming he can’t by assessing his weaknesses currently and the fact he’s not been trusted by Conte to play there).

Whether we should of had a penalty or not I do think we need to fix the real issues within the squad to stop these losses happening. All the teams we've played around us we've lost but we've lost the same way everytime. We are not learning from our mistakes which is very concerning for me. Woolwich,United,Newcastle and now Liverpool all of the big league games we've played this season we have lost. That's alarming under supposedly one of the best coaches in world football and we can't use the excuse of it being an away game now because the last two have been home games. It just feels all too familiar to me.

Only the Utd game we were outplayed.

10 men against Woolwich away.

We were the better team vs Newcastle & Liverpool.

If we played like we did against Utd then that’s the time to shit the bed, but we didn’t, so there’s no need to.

All whilst having 3 of our most influential players out (Romero, Son & Kulu). Not just the effect of their absence but by not having them it limits our rotation options and preferred formation that Conte wants.

I genuinely can't watch us at the moment. I've been 4 times this season compared to the 20-25 games a season I have done for many years. Had a ticket for today's game and just couldn't be bothered to go. I don't even watch our League games on TV but do catch the odd CL match. I saw the Tweet of Kane's goal and that was the entirety of my viewing of today's game.

How pub players like Royal and Sanchez get to wear the famous Lillywhite shirt is literally beyond me.

I take my hat off to the fans that are still making the effort to attend.

I'll leave you with this.

"The great fallacy is that the game is first and last about winning. It is nothing of the kind. The game is about glory, it is about doing things in style and with a flourish, about going out and beating the other lot, not waiting for them to die of boredom.”

Danny Blanchfower.

It was a good game and, in the 2nd half, the atmosphere was much better.
It goes hand in hand, but when the performance isn't great the atmosphere isn't great, and when the atmosphere isn't great, the performance isn't great.

We could all do our bit. I'm not a loud fan unless there's a real tide of momentum. There were a few times yesterday in the second half when we were huffing and puffing, I could see the likes of PEH trying to gee up the fans and it worked tbh.
