FIFA awarding the World Cup to Qatar was wrong. Qatars attempt to improve their reputation failed. Infantino’s attempt to protect their reputation was the subject of widespread derision. A decision to boycott the World Cup did absolutely nothing. The World Cup would happen and then that’s it… poof, people will move on after a month and think that was a weird aberration. (Edit: for what it’s worth I have advocated for European nations to secede from FIFA if real changes aren’t brought - change would come quick then).
That is not true of Qatar owning a club. For one, it contributes to long term instability in the game, distorting the transfer market at the top and harming the whole football pyramid (as I’ve explained to you, but you chose to ignore). That is the greatest evil and it doesn’t exist in the context of a World Cup. As people are beginning to acknowledge in here, the effect of countries owning clubs is that well-run teams who rely only on their own skill are no longer able to compete. Sport IS competition. So the effect of this type of ownership destroys the sport.
A second far less important difference is that you likely will contribute money and praise to the owners if they bring success which is the kind of direct contribution that does not exist for a World Cup. If England did well at the world cup you would have bought an England shirt and praised Southgate. You wouldn’t have congratulated Qatar. I suspect for many that will be different if Qatari ownership were to bring success to Spurs.
There are some clear differences that don’t involve pretending that we can switch off our morality. And also that acknowledge that even ignoring moral concerns, this will contribute to the decay in competitiveness of the British and European game. All that to win a few trophies? No thanks. Not at my club.
For balance you should also admit the “fucked over his country” bit is tabloid at best and fabricated at worst. Making a bet that the pound will fall is what thousands of traders do day in and out, and you don’t label them traitors.

You’re right - « greatest evil » was not the right word. « Most troubling aspect for a spurs fan » would be better. Correct. For the reasons I gave. Qatar faced criticism and watching the world cup at home didn’t bring any additional revenue to the country. I predict that if Qatar or similar owned Spurs then:
- spurs fans would contribute revenue to the ownership
- the ownership would receive praise
- spurs fans would gloss over the problems in Qatar far more than they did for the World Cup.
We will see if I’m right. And if I am then there are clear material differences. You can’t gloss over reputation and money however much you would like to.
