Starts to get complex when the first teamer you are replacing decides he’s too good to sit on our bench and wants to leave, or causes hassle in the dressing room. These aren’t just chess pieces that can be moved where you want them to go.

I don't think in terms of a first 11 anymore - a team has to rely on about 16 regulars with a back up of another 6 or so, particularly this season with game frequency.

So that means players need to be confident they can win a place in the first x1, but also accept rest/recovery time when they miss a few matches.

I agree. Would be lovely if the players were as level headed. Not sure they all are though!

If they think they're too good when they're not, then cheerio if they're not prepared to knuckle down and earn their place back.

If they cause hassle in the dressing room then don't let them in the dressing room.

There's far more danger in mollifying these players than there is in sending them to Coventry if they start playing the role.

It's funny how teams like City can keep a squad of WC players happy, whilst we've got to be careful with players that aren't good enough to start for us.

All fair and can’t disagree. I would say that City probably pay their squad players above what we pay our first team players and that extra few million a year probably abates a number of tantrums.

To the original point though, upgrading the first eleven so that previous first team players drop to the bench, isn’t always easy. We could easily upgrade Dier to see him move on and then have a massive drop off when new Centre back is injured and Rodon has to deputies for a few weeks.

6 months ago, we were all so giddy thinking about Perisic and Son overlapping down the left. I'm still shocked they haven't produced more, though I'd say that Perisic's crossing has been pretty good with 5 assists.
Both good players but Perisic often occupies the space that Son seemed, in the past, most comfortable working out of. They are not complimentary parts.
