Rather just let him go as opposed to spending the next two seasons failing to sell him while he pollutes our wage bill and then we let him go for free anyway.

He had no sell on value, this is a better result than Levy deluisionally seeking a fee for years while he takes up a squad spot.
 
Also for anyone worried about any dissatisfaction with Doherty or Kane/Dier, we’ve clearly done Doherty a massive favor here. We could have stopped his move that he clearly wanted and made him stick around but we let him go get his move for free.

We’ve done right by him and I’m sure his mates will notice.
 
Was fantastic at end of last season until his injury. Unfortunately don’t think he was ever going to get that fitness again. Weird to terminate now but probably would have gone for a free anyways

we got rid of deadwood finally. Dier can join him in the summer (although he doesn't have Mendes as an agent so won't be at atletico)

People were complaining about it earlier in the thread.

I do think players notice how clubs treat players though and it matters to them. Football is a small community and footballers/agents know which clubs are shit shows and which ones take care of their players.

It’s a small thing, but if Kane is considering resigning it’s not bad to not piss off his mate for a pointless reason.

Winks is 26, Doherty was one of Jose's cloggers. If Winks is past his injuries there is still loads of value. The fact that Doherty's contract with Atleti is only to the end of this season shows that he's worth fuck all.

Delighted by this news, he was shit and a Gooner.

Now let's announce a proper RB as his replacement.

Its hard to say without knowing what's gone on over the last few weeks. Has it just been landed on Doherty in the last few days that we want him out, he needs to move country and possibly relocate young kids for school etc. Or is he excited by the opportunity? Is it not possible to sell a player like this for 5/6 million earlier in the window, or last summer? Do we expect to get 10-15m for guys like this and does that make them impossible to sell? We seem to be running a messy operation

Doherty has been for sale for at least three windows.

I think what often happens with players like Doherty is not that they have no suitors but that they have no suitors at clubs they’d be willing to go to. They don’t want to take a significant step back in both club quality and wages so there’s no deal that is really viable because no one half decent wants Doherty, Aurier, Winks, washed Danny Rose, etc.

Honestly think we’re better off washing our hands of players like this rather than holding out for 3m years too late. Squad spot and wages off the books are more valuable than a paltry transfer fee.
