Not so much about Richy but doesn't your sentence there "Which "better than" Kane Striker was on the horizon in the summer (Ditto Son for that matter)? " perfectly highlight the glass ceiling the club has reached and - if we are brutally honest - had already reached under Poch?
No; it just reflects that Kane is still one of the best STs in the world.
Can you name a single club in the world that has signed a ST good enough to render their previous WC guy to being #2?
.......To a lesser extent the same comment applies to Son last summer too (current form accepted). (.....But for some cock-teasing from agents and Porto, we came close with Diaz last season, but lo and behold the draw of filling the outgoing Mane's shoes for a recent league & CL winner proved more appealing.)
.......At that point, all you do is hope to build better depth; which is what we attempted to do in the instance of Richy.
(Unless that's what you're saying; in which case I'm not sure what you're contesting.......?)
Our initial signing of Son is actually another similar instance...... Took him nearly 2 years to cement a regular starting role; cos we already had Kane, Eriksen & Dele flying (+ Lamela and later Lucas also contesting for game-time).... Starting players that at the time; it simply wasn't feasible to upgrade upon given our revenue streams and the profile of the club across Europe.
We had a not dis-similar dilemma when trying to recruit long term replacements for Toby & Jan.... We topped up investing significantly in players we believed would grow but regretfully never rose to the task.
We have very good players, anything better or even on a level is (usually) outside the budget the club has set for transfer fees and wages. Even if the budget for both has increased since the stadium started to increase the revenues.
See above...... It's got nothing to do with tangible budgets at the level we're talking about above unless you're talking limitless budgets and clubs with enough appeal to stockpile WC players on their bench without them wanting to get the fuck out .
.........Even then; why have Man U been dicking about without a bonafide top CF since Lukaku left?
........Why do the Chavs, despite having spent a mint, still find themselves dicking around with Havertz up top and no dependable talisman since Costa lost the plot or arguably even as far back as Drogba.?
So unless we can scout (and coach) a miracle like Napoli seemed to have done or like Leicester did, then we are where we can ever get to under the current model.
I don't know the odds/probabilities on either Leicester or Napoli but I'd guess comfortably both are over 1000 to 1. So basically we are ok with the glass ceiling unless we hit a 1000 to 1 shot.
.........Perhaps you're more in agreement with me than I though. However, your post that I originally replied to had a very different tone to this last one.
Regardless, my main point here was that last summer, our strategy clearly wasn't to just buy a bunch of bench players and hope we magically get better. Primarily; even though our spending has increased and Fab has got us in a position where we have some promising players on our books now, we still need to get better bang for our buck in the trf market and develope our younger players better(*).........
(*For reference; It's a myth that Woolwich have outspent us since we moved back to WHL and their best player comes from their academy; yet here they are at the top of the table.)
