I would regard Dier as a transfer success, we paid 5m, he played a lot of good important games, now we need better. If he wants to run out his contract, I'm ok with it.

Exactly, we got excellent value from Dier for the money we paid.
The problem is the huge number of players who cost £30m plus and have given us nothing. Sess, Reguilon, Gil, Sanchez, Ndombele, Lo Celso, Spence, Richarlison. That lot cost us £300m. Those are the players that have killed us.
Impossible to argue with this. Simply, and yet beautifully put.
Hence the reason every manager ultimately fails and we're on our longest trophy drought since the second World War
