There weren't enough games to really run through the squad and decide.
We also played Kane in a half of every game despite knowing he wanted out.

United played twice as many games despite not having a new coach who doesn't known his squad and not having a desperate need to get 6-10 players out.

I think there could have been one more game (As I said, shame Leicester and Roma didn't go ahead as would have been better than practically a training game against Lions).

But I don't have any issues with how our pre-season went outside of that. Ange got to see (like we did) who was good enough and who wasn't. You don't need to play 6, 7, 8 games to figure it out. He'd have seen alot more in training than in the friendly games.

The big issue in the off season was either not getting deals done quicker and as we currently see, getting rid of the deadwood. Though likely not easy when no one actually wants them.

Pre season was a disaster. IMO, any new coach should be getting at LEAST half a dozen games before the kick off.
I miss the days of domestic friendlies. Now where near as profitable but at least gave coaches time to look at players instead of sitting on planes and recovering from jet lag.

No doubt.... I totally blame Levy for the rain and Roma cancelling our game.

Wasn't helped by all business completely stalling because Levy decided he was needed on the tour.

Fuck that shit.... You don't get to melt and cry about "gaslighting" and then trot out this crap.

Rewind and accept that to your own admission you don't "know "shit then fair enough; but leave it at that.
Melting and crying is one way to put it. Maybe watching the same movie for the past 10 years has made me a bit tetchy.
Balls. I suggest you check the exits in 2014/15, 2015/2016 & 2021/22.

Levy wields the axe and clears the deck when he (AND THE MANAGER) sees fit. Even as late as last Jan, he was prepared to send both Spence & Doh out on loan in order to spend 45m on Porro.
Yeah and Doherty we literally had to release because of not understanding the limits on amounts of players you can loan. True story. So what confidence may I have in the planning of our back room members as it relates to outgoings?

And yes as mentioned above when we finally did a clear out in 15 under Poch things changed for the better. What happened from 17-20, including our 0 transfer 2018 window, was a tragedy and a disaster. And I’m not going to forget that, no one should.
IF in 2 weeks time we don't shift any more players and it results in no more sigings then you have a cause to cry....

In the meantime, keep you knickers dry for fucks sake.......... You're not gonna get some massive life improvement from Tanganga being sold for a few million or Reg going back out on loan FFS.... Nor is it gonna mean that we get Osimehn rather than Orban.
This is such a reductive anti-discussion view upon things. Yes getting these players out won’t bring a massive life improvement. But even a middling life improvement would be great! If we could get CB depth and another forward (as has been rumored) i’d feel much much better about the season.

This is what I mean. I’m not saying we need to shift players for the sake of it. We need to shift players so that we can improve the squad and actually challenge for top 4.

It sounds to me that trimming the squad down has taken the highest priority which again is not an issue that any serious club should want to be facing with only 2 weeks to go in the window.

I will judge the success at the end of course. But right now it very much seems we are looking to sell before buying (obviously we don’t need to, but we prefer to)

Im hoping that there will be a flurry of sales and a couple more signings over the next couple of weeks.

hopefully its going to be a case of better late than never but we will have to wait and see.

The problem is the money spinning in English football. Overinflated prices and enormous wages!!

Hardly no other countries(bar the Saudi) can afford it! We ourselves are pricing out our own players to other Leagues more or less

Almost every big league outside the Prem are in big problems economically!

Maybe it's time to put a wage cap in world football, because we are killing our beautiful game as it is.
Long overdue

And look there likely will be. Even I am not that pessimistic. It seems there are 6 or 7 potential outgoings aside from Lloris which is good news.

The problem as I am trying to eloquently state is that if we do say sell Hojbjerg or Sanchez, each of whom have significant rumours about their outgoings, it’ll likely be done with a week remaining in the window. And we do need to replace them in the squad, we cannot have Dier and Davies as CB depth and we need another 6 who can cover Bissouma.

Waiting this long to sell players puts us in a horrific position to replace them with only a week left in the window. That’s the whole issue with waiting this late, it always is.

So many things go into planning. Maybe learn a single valuable lesson, just one lesson, and attempt to put it into practice.

-if we’ve struggled to shift these same players for close to 5 years now using our strategy of wait and see.. maybe it’s time to re think the outgoing strategy
-if it appears that there’s nothing wrong with our strategy of selling players and the issue is just solely interest-based bc the players are shite, then accept that too
-make a cost-benefit analysis of what will happen if we continue to keep these wages on the books and leave us unable to buy new players, and accept that maybe some tough decisions need to be made to back Ange.

This is a crucial period for our club and not getting in a good attacker and CB depth could be the difference between 9th and 4th, I’m being dead serious. Failing to back Ange in the market due to our strategy of banging our head against the wall hoping something changes with outgoings is unacceptable.
Question for you and all the people talking about « failing to back » Ange.

Has the manager once expressed dissatisfaction with what’s happening or are you all projecting?

“We can't just keep acquiring players. It's not so much one has to happen for the other (outgoings and incomings), but our focus for the moment is to try and trim the squad down and see where that takes us in terms of reinforcements. We're constantly assessing things - still a few weeks to go - and I'm sure you'll see some movement. We can strengthen in all areas but that's not about bringing in players for the sake of it. They need to be the right profile.”

Clearly he wants to strengthen the squad (as does any rational fan as we still have clear gaps and weaknesses).

God this sophistry from ENIC/Levy defenders is so tiring. The problem is obvious, the squad isn’t good enough, it’s bloated, it needs to be cut down, and we need to upgrade players to challenge for our ambitions.

That problem is still yet to be solved.

Until it is we will be falling short of a trophy again and again and again, as we have the past 15 years. And it looks that way yet again unless things change massively by 31 August.

Completely agree

There are still 3 positions we would need to fill for me to feel really happy with the window, 2 and id be ok and that is only because we don't have Europe this season.

Bentancurs injury is definitely a big pain for us too and i'll feel a lot better about our MF when he is fit again if we were not to bring in another option in that part of the pitch.

I would say you've pretty much nailed it there, Tom.

Completion of their Multi Sports and entertainment complex (with the football club footing the bill) was mission accomplished.

All they need to do is to fill the place with punters every week...paying the highest prices on planet earth, and they're happy.

I think our transfer strategy.... and unwillingness to match the ambition of former managers and star players is testament to this, unfortunately .

Joan, I’m not very happy with Levy. But it should be pointed out that, yes, the club footed the bill for the stadium et al, but it also receives the proceeds, which are significant.

As I sad, I’m not very happy with Levy’s stewardship and haven’t been for a while. I would love us to be bought and run better than we have been the last few years. But I really think the Levy out movement would have more success if they actually focused on what Levy has done/is doing badly instead of this constant misguided gibberish.

Moaning about the club funding the stadium and events is just playing into the pro Levy agenda, these are things that Levy has actually done well, increasing the clubs revenue streams and revenue and making us more appealing to potential buyers.

You need to concentrate on what Levy is doing badly. Which is managing the football “brand” of the business, which is the core business. Investing the clubs money badly in player assets and huge contracts for poorly matched coaching staff, out of sync with the brand. Mismanagement of academy assets and academy coaching staff.

Ange could not say any more often or directly that what he cares about this season is establishing his style of play as opposed to having a finished product squad pushing for trophies.

The "can this serial winner break Levy into giving Poch's team the resources it needs to finally come good" dynamic is over. Love it or hate it, that era is now behind us.

England isn't a very big place. Most players don't live in London, they live outside, where it's nice. The training ground is at the very northern limit of London. We only play half our games in our part of London.

I don't think it's as big a deal just being in London, as it is to have a club that actually wins things, spends money and pays wages.
That's Chelsea, that's not us.
:balesnarl: most of our squad 100% live in London. Kane was in the process of moving more centrally. I've spoken to agents who tell me that living in London (central London )is a very big draw for Latin American and African players and in particularly their wives. What Ive noticed about my fellow English men is that its them who are down on London. All the Italians I know personally (family and freinds!) Would not choose to live north of Watford if they could at all help in fact they'd rather root canal. Its like inverse patriotism. Lol 🤣

Ummm... Kndly fuck off with that shit.

What I said about Maddison is entirely reasonable....... That doesn't mean I don't value or have no respect for our history and our club.

You do know that players don't have to live in a shitty one bed flat in Newcastle city center don't you?

If you don't see the clear appeal of NC as a football project (CL; richest club in the world) then you're in denial....... Perhaps one should ponder that you're a "troll"?

BTW, my comment about trophies was with the Chavs in mind (not NC); pre-emptively heading off the innevitable "Yeh, but what about Chelsea" bleating.
Newcastle may be rich but it is blood money.

The players may not have to live in shitty one bed flats in Newcastle but when it comes to the other things the city comes with it. Take Tonali who is dating fashion influencer Juliette Pastore who if they get married will have to move from one of the Fashion Capitals of the world to Newcastle which is not renowned for it fashion boutiques. While London is another Fashion Capital and unlike Milan it may not be home to the original Gucci Store it does have most of the famous designer outlets. Never forget the amenities and night life in London is a massive draw for these young millionaires.
