They are going to get that money by dragging their heels and staying until the end of their contract anyway.

Let them put their careers on hold for a year then,I’m guessing they were told that they wouldn’t play and to look for another club?
Sets a precedent paying off contracts, everyone with a year left on their contract will start playing hard ball looking for a pay out

We already set the precedent with Aurier.

For Hugo I’d have come to terms. He’s about to retire.

Eric not the same. He can choose not to play for a year if that’s what he wants to do.

If I really wanted a 3rd CB and I had no chance to sell Dav, maybe then but as we can get buyers, then Eric can chill if that’s what he wants

And Doherty. It’s not good for the club to pay players to leave. As harsh as it sounds (I personally like Dier as a person and I believe he has been a decent player for us) Dier has to made an example of.
He was told he wasn’t needed and had the opportunity to leave for the whole summer and chose to dig his heels in and stay, lloris too.
Make them train on their own, get them in early every day running laps around the pitch or something like that. If they are late or don’t show up fine them. Would make any player in the future think twice about running their contract out and refusing to leave

I doubt it would.

Almost unrecognisable.

The weirdest thing with Dier is that, I'd imagine, the best thing for him would be to play zero minutes this season. It'll get toxic if he plays.

Our fanbase universally wanted him gone and he'll be horrendously exposed by Ange's playing style. Sanchez was also a bit of a lightning rod for fan ire, so with him gone I doubt there'd be patience for Dier in any way.

Honestly, it's all a little disappointing. I expected Ndombele to be happy sitting on his arse and taking a pay cheque but really thought Dier would value some game time (if not needing to take a pay cut).
No they don't.
A few obsessives have become fixated with him. The fans in the stadium never give him a problem.
The big anti Enic protest did not happen because only a few dozen share their hysterical views.
Dav is a "good bloke" and a "total pro" and so is Eric.
And Eric is a better player.

We pay the rest of his contract.
He then gets a sign on bonus to go to his next club as a free agent.

He transfers then it’s almost certainly on a lower salary so loses out on his last year of earnings here and also doesn’t get a sign on bonus.
Spurs paying say £8m to cancel his contract - that being 1 year of wages due on the contract for one year

If we aren't commanding a fee then that amount can go directly to Hugo to cover his wages. It'd be nice to get his wages off of our books but between a signing bonus and salary Hugo could easily make 8+ million. The key is that Hugo wants to play somewhere and have it be meaningful, that is a bigger issue than the money as nobody seems willing to do that.

I am not sure you understand.

Hugo has turned down at least 3 clubs offers this summer for reasons which seem to be that he wants to be no 1 at a big club or similar - but it appears everyone is of the same opinion that he might be a no 2 GK at a big club for a couple of years, or a no 1 GK at a smaller club as age means he is no longer as good as he was

But he has turned those opportunities down.

If he does not play football any time soon, its likely that his job opportunities are more likely to sink to no 2 GK at a smaller club - with next to no signing on bonus.

So Hugo's best option is probably to lower his expectations to go to a club NOW or the clubs offering him a position will get worse and he may find it better to retire. So he needs to make a decision - Spurs cannot do that for him.

The money follows his decision, not the other way round.

Well, it's too late for him to go to a club in Europe.
