Transfers January Transfer Thread 2024

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

It says a lot that we're already talking about the next transfer window. No defensive cover for Romero and VDV? With CBs, it's not a question of if they get injured or suspended but when they get injured or suspended. We will not get through to January without having to turn to other players to play in central defence. Fact.

Our back-up options are as follows:

Phillips - youth prospect with only 8 league appearances in the second tier. No top flight experience.

Dorrington -even less experience than Phillips

Dier - universally loathed due to his poor performances last season. Completely untrusted by the fans and the manager.

Emerson - I think he could potentially do a job for us at CB but unproven and no guarantee it will work out.

Davies - best of the bunch. Sound back-up option but still a huge drop-off in quality.

Can't believe this has happened. I hope these back-up players step up into the players we want them to be, and I will be absolutely delighted if I'm proved wrong, but I see problems ahead.

Why exactly is it a fact we will get an injury or suspension in the next 15 matches? Saliba and Gabriel started the first 27 PL games last season and Gabriel didn't miss a game all season. Botman and Schar both played 36 games. Etc..

Yes it could happen but Ange obviously trusts Phillips or Emerson to cover.

My word some of you seem like you'd be scared to ride the ghost train at Barry Island.

'We want Sanchez gone!'
'We don't want Dier anywhere near the first team!'

'Oh my word! Where is our CB cover?? What will we do if Romero gets a boo-boo?!'

Get a grip. We'll be fine.

I think that's the exception rather than the rule. My observation from watching football over the years is that players who play in positions that involve a lot of running, tackling and aerial challenges are more prone to pick up injuries and suspensions because they're right in the thick of it.

I'll grant you that my post was a bit emotive but I'd rather we were prepared for Romero and VDV being unavailable than praying they're available for every match. I feel that Sanchez was the difference between those two mindsets.

I would say CB’s are the most resilient and hardy players to injury. I was a left back/left wing back but when I played CB it was physically a piece of piece. Might get a clump or a kick but probably made four sprints per game vs twenty out wide

Romero isn't really, but his style of playing is very different than the average CBs. Fingers crossed he lasts till January, if not, I hope young Phillips can step up.

Van de Ven played 33 out of 34 Bundesliga matches last season (and had no injuries). If we aren't unlucky he should make it to January, particularly since I don't expect him to start for his national team.

Romero on the other hand played 27 of 38 matches last season, 9 missed due to injury, I believe the rest were due to suspensions. So overall he missed 28% of league matches, if he misses a quarter of our fixtures from now till January he'll miss 4 games. Let's hope it doesn't happen, but it wouldn't shock me.

He was dicking around, waiting for the world cup and hated conte, no one is convinced he was properly injured l, not for how long or dragged anyway.

Doesn't reflect well on him.but can't disagree conte was a wanker so hey ho

January: Gallagher and a CB

Summer: pay whatever it takes up to 125m and 300k/week for the best attacking player you convince to join (Osimhen, Leao, Ferguson, Kvaratskhelia, Lautaro, Rashford, Mitoma, whoever else looks up for it).

If we add depth at CB and midfield in the winter, I genuinely think the only purchase we’ll need in the summer is a world class attacking player. Do what Liverpool did when they were on the precipice of breaking out as team, dedicate your funds to an elite player who can push you over the top like Van Dijk and Alison did.

When has this ever worked at a non-Galactico club?

I feel like these record transfer deals fuck with the players heads too much.

I noted two examples where it worked quite well, for a club that was below us back then and in a similar building stage to where we are now.

If we address CB depth in January, there just isn’t a lot of positions we’ll need filling this summer. I don’t see any reason to not prioritize elite expensive talent, assuming we can attract it, we have most of the squad already assembled.

Identify and bring in some quality young prospects too if you have the cash. But we’ve got legitimate depth at every position at CB, we’re lacking explosive/world class talent in the front three.

We'll probably lose Lo Celso, Hojbjerg, and Perisic, and will have to replace all of them. We might also elect to invest in better backups than Davies and Forster.

Don’t get why you got kisses for this.

Club fumbled the window on the 2nd CB he asked for.

Now he’s called the bluff on shifting Sanchez after the window. He’d rather get shot of him now and go with Phillips if it means long term better squad building.

The club were satisfied leaving another manager with Sanchez when the window shut. Blatant neglect.

If we lose Perisic I'd take Jota (ex-Celtic) on a loan with an option to buy if that Al-Ittihad deal goes through for Sala.

I think Lo Celso stays the year. He'll get his minutes.

Unless PEH bites the bullet in January and downgrades his expectations to get a starting XI spot at a smaller club, I don't see him leaving.

The post is referring to positions we'll need next summer, we're not keeping Lo Celso for his last year and losing him on a free.

Who don’t u rate? I’m very confused

It's less about not rating but look at the best midfielders in the PL and their combinations and then compare.

So Woolwich have a better all round midffield, so maybe do Liverpool, City obviously. Scum club have the players if not the cohesion as yet and United. I think Newcastle have strength if not the creativity of a Maddison for example.

I hope I am wrong but I feel we lack 'the man' and what I mean by that is the player who can and does stand above all at any given time.
