Is it still true that Lewes is the only club in football that pays men and woman equal pay for playing?

looks tough.

They currently have an equal playing budget, which is not quite the same thing. But they are big advocates and agitators around equality in football, as well as anti gambling. Some might call it woke, but it’s a niche opportunity that probably gives the club publicity and support it wouldn’t otherwise have, so commercially it makes sense.

However… to be honest, the leadership of the club seem to promote the women’s team way more than the men’s. It’s making news but it’s not sustainable where they are currently (Championship) with the big clubs now putting money into their women’s teams. So funnily enough, to be sustainable at current league levels, the women’s team need more money than the men, but there simply isn’t the interest or support to justify trying to compete with sides funded by large professional league clubs.

I put money into Lewes FC when they nearly went bust not simply because of their community engagement, but also - and moreso - to back the men’s First XI as it’s a great place to watch decent football. I want the women to do well but I also hope the U9s do well, without avidly caring if they do or not. The men’s First XI is where the bulk of the support is at, and should always be the highest priority for publicity and support.

Good news for Southend fans.

CLUB STATEMENT: SALE OF THE CLUB
We can confirm that an agreement for the sale of the Club has been reached with a consortium led by Justin Rees. Everyone is working towards a completion date of 1 November 2023, that is when the consortium will formally take control of the Club.

The collaborative approach to agreeing this deal would not have been possible without the support of creditors and the assistance from the Leader of Southend City Council.

We recognise that this has been a stressful time for all associated with the Club. We would like to thank our staff for their incredible loyalty and also thank all our stakeholders for their patience.
