Rules What is your interpretation of the (current) handball rules?

Bit of a mess isn't it?

I don't even think the officials know what the rules are themselves and are just guessing.

My interpretation is that a handball is given as pen if the defender's arm isn't in a natural position.

But what is a natural position?

Because it seems like you can still give away pens if you're in a natural position like Romero against Woolwich but the ball was going in I suppose.

Don't know, seems like a lottery these days.

I have no idea but I was a footballer today near the box i'd be actively booting the ball at people's arms and hands. Everyone seems to get a penalty.

Should be simple.

Does your hand/arm move towards the ball when it’s kicked.

If yes then pen

If no then no pen

No more of this ‘unnatural position bullshit’. If a player whacks a ball against someone arm that should be their problem.

The handball rule originally was to stop you playing rugby, the offside rule was to stop you goal hanging. The current rules are anal.

Look at Keane handball. He stops the ball with his hand away from the body. He stopped their cross/attack using hand. It’s penalty.

That wouldn’t have been a penalty decades ago. It’s not his job to move his arm and it was so close it would have been difficult anyway, if he isn’t deliberately blocking then why is it a problem. I don’t like this as players will simply target the arms of other players like Sissoko in the CL final, if it’s not deliberate it shouldn’t be a pen.

I will caveat this with a scenario.

If a player kicks the ball at a players hand and his arm is say stretching out nowhere near his body AND the the defender is stopping an abvious goal i.e the ball is flying in then isn't that unfair on the attacking team?

Possibly but I would say that’s deliberate and refs in extreme cases should be able to call it.

The old way of deliberate handball worked far better. We just end up now with penalty merchants looking to kick the ball against players arms and hands.

As childs the football field we decided that hand is when the ball goes to hand - penalty, free kick - end of discussion!

Today it depends on your mood!

Well yeah I mean if it wasn't deliberate, we have seen than before whether defenders seems are stretched out due to momentum or whetever.

This is clearly a grey area here, I don't think it's as black and white as saying if its deliberate it's a pen and vice versa.

Romero against United not also not given either.

Much to our delight of course.

Again, it's inconsistencies and no one seems to know the rule.

I think if someone has quite clearly moved their arm towards the ball, it's a penalty. Ball to hand should very rarely be given as a penalty unless the hand is obviously in a unnatural position.

Seems like the Premier League expect you to jump with your hands by your side. Which is fucking ridiculous as it’s impossible to jump high enough and remain balanced by doing so.

If your arm is in an “unnatural position”, it moves to meet the path of the ball or you have plenty of time to move it out the way then it should be deemed a handball. If you’ve jumped to compete for a header and the ball deflects off someone’s head and you have a fraction of a second to react to it then it shouldn’t be a penalty (unless it’s a penalty for us in which case it should always be a penalty).

It’s pretty staggering how the Premier League can be considered the best league in the world yet have such gaping holes in its officiating. From referee standards, ridiculous rules and the absolute farce that VAR can be, they’ve got serious work to do.

It's pretty straight forward -

If the ball hits your head and then your arm in the first 19 mins of a game, but doesn't touch your left knee, then it's handball. however, after 19mins if the ball bounces twice then you kick it and the ball flies up hits your chin then catches the bottom half of your left arm then it's it's a red card for the goal keeper up the other end.
If the ball hits any part of your arm, in the penalty area or not, and a pigeon flies past then it's a stonewall penalty.

I don't get why it's so hard to grasp.
