I think we make a lot of silly fouls. Becausr we're very high energy, high pressure, try and win the ball back at all costs when we lose it type of team. I get that.
But it just seems we're punished more because of it. As if all of our fouls are considered professional fouls and therefore worthy of yellows.
Again, could be Spurs bias. But let's take an extra look at the weekend game. Everton. Pretty physical team. I would bet that Everton make plenty of fouls throughout the game, some by the same player who goes unpunished, but the moment we commit a foul, that's probably no worse than some Everton have made throughout the game, we'll be carded for it. Everton will then continue to foul us and to unpunished until it's too late in the game to likely make a difference
I personally think VAR creates a big inconsistency in the game. This season the refs have been apparently told to let the game flow (ie be lenient) so for the first 20-30 mins most games consist of our players getting the shit kicked out of with limited protection.
Later in the game we start to react and at that point the refs and VAR show up so it looks like we get treated worse and you end up with situations where by opposition players can commit 6 fouls without even a yellow.
The other aspect is where VAR intervenes. Romero got sent off for a follow through even though he won the ball (fair enough), Arse player does the same thing and nothing no VAR to be seen, Ruben Dias goes high footed on Skipp again nothing. It’s like VAR is asleep and wakes up from time to time.
In short it feels like the consistency is all over the shop. I don’t think it’s mostly the refs fault though, I think it’s the combination of refs plus VaR and the grey areas inbetween.
