Transfers January Transfer Thread 2024

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

I don’t have anyone specific but I don’t work for the club as a scout,

Don’t get me wrong I understand the prudence of Werner as a loan. But we have always been prudent as a club when it comes to transfers and it’s got us to where we are.
It’s yet to get us above a certain level though and to break that ceiling we might need to do something we’ve never done before.

I see the wisdom in what you were prev. suggesting, but I can't think of any high profile players that are reportedly up for grabs in this window. Equally I can't think of any big clubs that are being forced to sell top players to balance the books; they're just max'd out on their spending until the summer.

...Meanwhile us spending 25m on Nusa and/or another 25m on the lad at Blackburn is gonna kickstart the whole window for everyone else.

I think Spurs are punting around for decent prospects. They have kosher money available that many/most other clubs don't. We have many prospects in our academy so we don't "need" Nusa but if he was a reasonable amount then we go for him.
The squad IMO is hard to improve if everyone is fit. Hog does not want to be a squad player but apart from him what is there - 2 or 3 players we can upgrade for this window?

As in most January transfer windows I think there are not too many decent players available.

And this January there are very few clubs with money who can buy players we want to move on.

So if we can't easily buy and we can't easily sell there may not be any movement until the summer.

But there's still 4 more days to go before window closes on Thursday evening, so still time for something currently unexpected to happen

What’s that compared to our top earners?

Kimmich: Approx 310kpw.....

Heung-Min Son F30 £9,880,000 £190,000
James Maddison M0 £8,840,000 £170,000
Cristian Romero D24 £8,580,000 £165,000
Dejan Kulusevski F22 £5,720,000 £110,000
Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg M27 £5,300,000 £101,923

Hugo & Perisic were biggish earners; now gone.

Yeah indeed

I said around mid December I didn't think the club would do much other than signing the CB and a winger (thought it was gonna be Jota) and we did that, I even mentioned that we wouldn't sign a CM until Hojbjerg left...he could still leave and I guess we'll look to sign Gallagher/Ederson if that was the case but I'm not entirely surprised we've just bought in the two and I'm fine with it.

Those were the prudent predictions indeed. Nothing wrong with our business. I’m just wondering that’s all

I'm expecting something unexpected, actually. :D

So, yeah we aren't signing Kimmich and paying him double what Son earns.

As others have pointed out, Nusa has played 28 games this season, 4 goals, 3 assists as a left winger playing in the Belgian league. Those figures aren’t exactly out of this world..

He looks like a skilful young player with potential. But social media and the media have hyped him up a ridiculous amount. He might end up being good, he might end up being wank.

Brentford spending £25m suggests they’re confident in the latter. They better hope so because for a team who aren’t guaranteed survival in the Prem, that’s quite a gamble.

Big players aren't often reported to be available though. At least not until the bids go in.

If we'd chucked 80m at Real for Vinicius, could it have happened?

Maybe, maybe not.

Kvaratskelia ?

maybe, maybe not.

Just feel like this window was possibly a unique opportunity to go big with very little competition.

I think one thing to come out of profit and sustainability rules is to look at what transfer fees and wages are affordable in the rules.

My guess is £80m is too big for any club. so maximum fee might be corrected to say £60m and similar reduction for high earners ....... and selling clubs of high fee players will want to wait until summer to see if there are any clubs who think they can still afford 80m.

Barcelona now knowing they can't, takes out one of the few clubs which might previously have bid 80m without blinking.

I'm still expecting huge transfers to happen tbh. There will be more caution around mid range transfers because the money isn't sloshing around to make it easy to move on the players you don't want.

But clubs like Real, Bayern, UTD, City, Liverpool, big transfer fees are almost part of the way they market their clubs. It's a way for them to sell themselves as an exciting club.

The bigger clubs will obviously pay the highest fees.

But if say Real Madrid decide they an afford to buy Osimehn for say £100m , there are maybe only half a dozen clubs (maximum) who could afford to pay a big fee as and when Madrid want to sell him on..... and I don't see the others wanting to buy that same player for a huge fee so player cannot move until his contract runs down.

So there might be one or two players on mega fees at a top club, but even they are squeezed by sustainability rules - as Barcelona have now found
