VDV would be happy if hes winning and watching quality in front of him. when hes having to run back from the halfway line after watching son, werner, johnson and co waste possession because they dont have the ability to play in tight spaces...its going to drain him mentally and physically.

to be honest the biggest problem is son. he offers you no box threat or fight. if youre going to have werner and johnson you instruct them to just keep hitting the byline and flashing the ball across the box to cause havoc....with that you need playrs in the box willing to get clattered in their pursuit of putting the ball in the back of the net. you dont have johnson and werner trying to imitate mahrez and grealish..not going to happen, they have a complete opposite skillset.

watching these forwards in this system is as cringe as watching when donkeys and a keeper with clown feet try and play out from the back because pep's sides do.

So how does he miraculously resolve it 2nd season? Especially if you buy more players who then need to integrated? Surely what resolution he comes up with in 2nd season he could come up with now. I’m sure he knows what to do now unless it hits him like lightening bolt in the close season. Anyway why can’t work on the style of play as he is doing and get the defence coach to sort out set pieces. It’s not as if one affects the other. Set pieces are from a dead ball. Also why can’t we keep son and say bj further out at corners meaning oppo have keep at least 3 players back. It’s not as if either are gonna win headers.

Agree but Ange wanted them and knew how they play. That is the bit that is worrying.

defending corners is always a struggle when you got one too many pussies in the side whos not going to want to head the ball. but even if you have just 3 players who are going to be aggressive in the air you cn at least be a lot better than we are. one in line with the front post 3-6 yards out, one central 3-6 yards out and one a few yards behind him 3-6 yards out....the one closest to where the ball is going to drop goes and attacks the fucking thing. very simple.

VDV for his height and being a CB needs to really up his game in the air. he looks to get his timing all wrong, looks very awkward for him.

Son isn’t a striker no matter how many times Ange or fans try and convince themselves he is. He’ll do a job there because he’s an honest player but I bet he hates it. It negates most of Son’s biggest goal scoring threats. Eg. Cutting in from the wing and curling a shot into the far corner or peeling off from the side onto a through ball from central areas to use his pace and great finishing ability. Both Conte and now Ange seem hell bent on not using him correctly. Hopefully if Richy is back fit for the remaining games he will come good again playing on the left. In fact, I bet he does.

Son isn't a touchline winger either.

Best position for Son Seems to be as an inside left but Ange doesn't play like that so jid best position in this team is as a striker.

I don't hate him. He just isn't actually what the system we play requires. He works great in a side that is all counter attack. It's why he impressed for Wales and Forest. We had 70% of the football on Sunday. We need a front three with technically adept footballers fit enough to press but better able to play one touch, we basically need prime Firminho.

Just like, but not nearly as bad, as Conte plays him then. Got to play to your best player’s strength and that’s not at CF. He’s so much more dangerous on the left of a front three. Even Ange has said he prefers him there for more danger and goals from our wide.

Correct. Foden is but he’s got the lot. We need technically very good players who are sharp. We have counter attacking players in Sonny,Werner and Johnson but we come up against teams that nullifies that. Solomon is someone of he’d stayed fit was more suited to how we play. Sharp,quick and technically very good. Whether we ever get the chance to see him remains to be seen.

It's a really good point.

But if you look at Ange's response in the post-Arse presser and it's pretty clear - getting the overall system right is higher priority than fixing set pieces. Ange plays the long game rather than the quick fix. All of his interviews and pressers are consistent with this theme.

As a long-game player, the long goal is to win the Prem. But I think the FA cup loss to Citeh, where we were well and truly outplayed, was where Ange realised that we weren't going to get close this season, and his priorities shifted.

Everything that has happened since then, including him resisting getting drawn into the "race for 4th" narrative, is consistent with being focused almost solely on the long term goal. That probably includes working the guys harder in training than he would if he wanted them fresh for the matches on the weekend.

As long as we finish 5th or 6th this season to get some sort of European football next season, and we have a half decent transfer window, things are set up well to start challenging the top 3.

There's no doubt that Ange is facing the challenge of his career. This is a tougher comp than Scotland, Japan, Australia and even arguably the World Cup. But he's a smart guy, a good man manager, and (for most of us anyway) quite likeable. He will relish the challenge. That doesn't mean he will succeed. But I'm looking forward to seeing how it plays out.

I agree that EPL is one of the top competitions, but what everyone seems to be missing is that it is all RELATIVE.

If you are coaching in one of these lesser Leagues, then compared to EPL, you have worse players, less money etc.

BUT, all the other teams in that league are in the same boat.
So if you can devise how to win in THAT LEAGUE, then you're a good coach.

In his second year, Ange has won titles at South Melbourne, Brisbane, Yokohama and Celtic.

Who's to say he won't do the same here?
