Player Brennan Johnson

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

Classic example of a young player that isn't quite ready to be one of the main men... I think we could get a decent fee for Kulusevsky, get a proper right sided attacker and use Johnson as an impact sub. I think this season was too much responsibility on his shoulders too soon, he's just a kid. Not every player matures as quickly as some that were mentioned here. With Kulu it's evident he can't play Anges system so if we keep only one of the two I'd keep BJ

Yeh... I don't think that was the plan at all.....

Kulu struggling.
Perisic - Injured
Solomon - Injured
Werner - Inured.
Richy absences dragging Son into CF...............

This flipside of this is of course that all the additional game-time will benefit him in the longer term.

I think he's had a good season with us.

He probably shouldn't have and probably wouldn't have expected to play as many games as he has. I see alot of potential with him, he's still very young.

Just doesn’t look at all comfortable or confident taking on the defender when he plays on the left, and becomes rather predictable in slowing down and cutting in. I look forward to seeing him get a more extended run on the right and a a chance to pick up some form and consistency. If we get 1 or 2 new wing forwards, however, it might be a bit start-stop for him and he’ll need to figure it out.

Some bad takes. Yes he’s frustrating but his 14 G+A puts him in a good spot. He’s behind Son and Richarlison in the team and he’s a lot younger. Maddison is in his peak years and cost as much and he’s on 12 G+A.

Olise is on 15.
Rice is on 15.
Odegaard 16.

He’s not far off those numbers and those are all top talents.

Eze is on 12.
Bernardo Silva is on 13.
Jota is on 13.
Luis Diaz is on 13.
Gakpo is on 12.
Doku is on 10.
Rashford is on 9.

His numbers are decent.

Will he ever be elite? Unlikely. But he’s a good player and there are many others who should be getting more criticism than he seems to get.

Difference is Johnson rarely ever draws double teams

He's given loads of space as teams don't see him as a threat

Compare that with the other players you mentioned including Son/Maddison - these players are often given little space and often double teamed creating space for others

Maddison has been shit but players swarm him as soon as he gets near the ball

Teams literally give BJ open space to run into and he's often left 1v1 and fails to do anything more often than not
He’s got the 8th most assists in the premier league. There’s Watkins on 12 assists, some players on 10 assists, and then Johnson on 9. He’s got the most assists in our team this season.

What on earth are you talking about?

Shame that own goals don't count as assists as he'd have 10 overall if that were the case.

15 g/a in 24 starts is a pretty good return for someone in their first season and only second in top flight football.

What's incredible is he should have so much more. But hes missed so many big chances and his excellent deliveries haven't punished opponents.

It’s a very good return - excellent output and this season has been a successful start.

I was at the club when Bale was in his early days and I remember speaking with coaches who were quite angry at the amount of criticism Bale was getting and that there was a plan for him and he would come good. I don’t think Johnson will become Bale good (that would be unreasonable) but there are similarities with the excessive criticism of a young player who is clearly adapting and growing all the time.

its valid criticism, because he makes a mess of more opportunities than he converts. If not they are certainly more memorable.

His overall contribution beyond his attacking play is almost non existent, but hey - he's an offensive player - right?

Only he doesn't really go past players all that much or force situations to become opportunities.

He looks bewildered and scared most of the time

I agree he can be frustrating. But the output is too strong to deny. Players who have had 14 G+A by season.

23-24
Son and Richarlison

22-23
Kane and Son

21-22
Son and Kane

20-21
Kane and Son

19-20
Son and Kane

18-19
Kane, Eriksen, Son

You get the idea… To get this kind of output from a 22 year old is very promising. Only two players who aren’t Kane and Son have done that for us in the past 6 seasons - and they managed it once.

There are FAR bigger issues in this team. Johnson is a relative bright spot.

The way people view players is interesting. When you don't have them there are people demanding the team spend whatever it takes to get them. Initially, excitement, then they settle into something close to their abilities. At that point fans declare them rubbish in direct proportion to whatever level of interest there was in them initially. Then, once they leave and do alright elsewhere the same fans say, "Oh, good for him. Glad it worked out. I always liked him. That was a missed opportunity for us." Then on to the next, "We have to him him player."

Dat fo' sho'

Getting Harry Kane back would help - we can promise him the same trophy haul as Bayern has an absolute minimum
