You won’t be able to judge if the ACL has truly fucked Bentancur till next season. Van Dijk was horrible the first season he came back from his ACL, almost looked finished.

Im having flashbacks of the Lo Celso videos from Betis - the season he got 16 goals and 6 assists and looked unplayable.

Not saying he’d be the same but it hurts :(

I guess the difference being we sacked Poch before he got a chance to really work with Gio and then we brought managers who never really rated him. Then he had injuries.

If Baena comes in now, it's at the start of a manager (hopefully) not the end.

13 goals and 13 assists in 5 seasons! HOW !!!

And he’s been the more productive of the two players we bought in our 100m midfield revamp. There was so much excitement!

I still believe things might have been different for both if we never sacked Poch.

If there is one thing we can learn from the last half decade of negligence for the football department at this club, it's that the health and profile of the squad is as important as the manager.

Poch's squad was burnt out and needed talent we couldn't afford to get to the next level. No amount of hiring "serial winners" could fix that structural issue in the squad. If we had given Poch more time to reconstruct his squad, we probably wouldn't have taken so long to get back to where we are now and players like Ndombele and GLC might not have been flops.

Yes I don’t disagree.

I think all the pieces clicked for us for 2/3 seasons in a way we didn’t expect. Kane, Son, Alli, Alderweirald and Lloris cost 60m and came together at the same time. Walker and Rose were incredible for a couple of seasons. Eriksen was cheap too. Vertinghen. All these players except Kane were the result of extremely shrewd signings (really top class) and they were suitable to play the football that our manager wanted to play.

Lightening in a bottle.

But that is difficult to sustain and we didn’t have the capacity to spend at the level of a club that put in the performances we were on the pitch. In a way it was bad luck that this happened when we were building the stadium and not two years later…

But we are now in a very strong position and if we can get a few more important pieces in this season ticket then we should be too 4 and competing for Europa and the domestic cups. I’d be disappointed not to get to a semi final and would hope to get to a final.

Big summer though and a lot of luck is involved.

I mean, we took a billion-pound loan to build the stadium. We always had the capacity if we had the conviction to win things with the football team.

We just didn't have the plan to do it at that point.

If I'm honest, forgive me if I'll wait and see before I believe this cycle will be any different. I think even this squad with Ange is further ahead this season than they expected and could even be ready for a next level player to kick on. My guess is they still stick to the same plan.

Guirassy might actually be possible for the type of fee we pay. I think he has a release clause.

28 G's 3 A's from 28 games this season
11 G's from 22 games last year

Always assumed it was a hot patch but he's been on fire to end the season.

Anyone watched him enough to have an opinion?
Not watched him enough myself and annoyingly there isn't much game footage online. But it's not unheard of for strikers to only come good in their mid-late 20s. His all round stats are top drawer too. I'd certainly be looking hard at him, for £15m he could be an astute buy that lets us spend big elsewhere.

The metrics are absolutely 🔥

The release clause is 17.5m Euros.....

This guy and keep Richy would give us depth up front and money to really go hard in other key areas. His trajectory is much better than 40m on Toney for example. But I haven't seen a minute of him playing...

Sport is competition that relies on human capital. Hiring in any field is a crapshoot.

Compare it with a restaurant that spends 5k on some equipment… you know ahead of time what that equipment will do for you. The risk is much diminished. Humans though - much less predictable. Having conviction just won’t cut it.

Same with our club. A stadium has much more certain returns than a £50m midfielder. There is a lot more risk with players.

The first transfer here in the list of all time record signings that was definitely a success is number 16 - Gareth Bale: Transfer records

It’s probable that Rice and Bellingham will also turn out to be successes. That’s 3 players in the top 16? It’s an unbelievably bad return in spending big.

The same would apply to Tottenham as a club.

This shit is hard and if you have limited resources you need luck. Or…you increase your resources. Which is what we’ve done and the only way we can compete long term. Well done Levy on the strategy.

Paul Mitchell. Sigh. We hardly knew ye.
