How Dry should our Powder be?

That's the crux, we spent something like £240m for him in his first year and we were and still are being aggressive in getting those players out, much more active than before anyway. The obvious difference in comparison is that they had a head start over us with the Arteta project and are heading into year 6, whilst we are in year 2.

We haven't reached our Rice stage yet, remains to be seen if we do but above all else we need to increase the wage bill, that's the single most important factor if you want to close the gap on the teams above us.
240m for Ange last summer.

Care to break those numbers down?

We spent more like 150m in Ange's first summer (15m of which is Veliz & Phillips).

It's 170m if you want to count Dragusin in January as well.

Where the hell is £240m coming from?

We are supposed to have top centre backs and full backs but we let over 60 goals in. Something doesn’t add up . Can see Micky at left back if Udogie still out. Drag looks a big hard bastard, just what we need
Exactly as savva said on football heritage. You could have prime maldini and barezi as CBs and if you leave them exposed on the transition they would ship in loads of goals. The 60 odd we let in last year was kept down primarily by VDV and attackers missing a hatful of chance with Vic foi g his best. It is not sustainable. Not sure what universe Ange is in but he hasn’t really done anything to address it with any tweak in tactics even with the players at his disposal atm. Something needs to change as we haven’t even improved our forwards.

I was literally coming here to post something very similar, I can't see how Ange sees us needing another CM even with Hojbjerg departing, we have Bentancur, Sarr, Bissouma, Bergvall, Gray and Skipp who can already play there, Skipp is the obvious one to get replaced but frankly do we really need to be spending £40m to replace a backup CM? Will Gallagher get in the team ahead of Sarr, Bentancur (who could look miles better having been fit for a while now and a full preseason) and a potentially refreshed Bissouma, who should have had the adequate time to get over the malaria he caught at the AFCON? If he is coming in, does it not obstruct the pathway to the first team for the likes of Gray and Bergvall? We've already spent £40m on Gray, are we really gonna splash £80m on 2 players that can play CM without bringing in a striker or wide forward first? Feels to me like those are the far more pressing areas to improve on the pitch, and the time for bedding in is getting narrower as we draw closer to the first day of the season...
Could not agree more

With the Calafiori signing it is now approx 700m that Arteta has spent. Very little has come back in sales. Plus they have had to pay off 6 big earning players. Put up or shut up time for Arteta.

19/20
- Pepe 80m Euros - not quality but backed I guess
- Saliba - 30m Euros - one for the future - loaned out for years
- Tierney - 27m Euros - CHeap not quality
- Luis - 9m Euros - Joke
- Martinelli - 7m - quality but no where near the prices you are talking

Not one player fits the profile you mentioned in the first season

20/21

- Partey - 50m Euros - Good player but barely played for them due to fitness and is a weird character
- Gabriel - 26m Euros - Great player but what some on here would call 'cheap' doesnt fit into your price range

some other shite was bought by them that window - one player just about fits into your profile.

21/22

- White - 58m Euros - been a very good player for them and cost the a fair whack
- Odegaard - 35m Euros - great player, amazing value.
- Ramsdale - 28m Euros - meh
- Tomiyasu - 18m Euros - Backup, cheap
- Lokonga - 18m Euros - lol
- Tavarez - 8m Euros - bigger lol

22/23

- Gabriel Jesus - 52.20m Euros - Good player but not really been consistently fit or answered their need for an actual striker
- Oleksandr Zinchenko - 35.00m Euros - never been a starter but i guess falls into your profile
- Fábio Vieira - 35.00m Euros - Money fits but quality - nope
- Leandro Trossard 24.00m Euros - 'Cheap' and could not image you would be amazed by this signing in Anges 4th season
- Jakub Kiwior - 19.50m Euros - Youth player - Cheap - proving to be decent quality
- Jorginho - 11.30m Euros - hardly splashing the cash but decent cover for them when needed

Obviously last season you are right, but it took them 4 years to get there and in all the previous seasons they had spent over 40/50 million on one player a season

The rest were relatively cheap and unproven quality at the time.

in short - you're chatting shite.

Ange was backed last season more than Arteta was in his first and I'm hoping he will be backed more this than Arteta was in his second
I love the way you go to all that trouble in an effort to disprove my point but actually end up spelling it out perfectly for everyone.

Cheers mate. :ange-clap:

Well i suppose with Scott McTominay being linked thats the low point of the window short of actually signing him. However unlikely it feels its the sort of shit that can happen if you leave your business late, dont get your targets and panic.

Yep I still remember levy pushing Charlie Adam and Phil Neville as possible signings on redknapp in the last days of the window. Anything is possible at this club.
