How Dry should our Powder be?

If you consider that we’ve sold Richy in this scenario, and Gil as well, we’ve actually downgraded our depth in the front 3.

Solanke is probably slightly better than Richy, but he’s not some world beating upgrade. I feel like the staff is overreacting to preseason. It’s way too optimistic. Lankshear Bergvall and Moore look great for their age but it’s not fair to lean on them as reliable squad options over a 50 match season. We are relying heavily on an aging Son to be the danger man year round and shockingly Timo bloody Werner.

If it’s Solanke and Neto it’s better but Neto is about as physically reliable as Lo Celso. Injuries will happen under Ange his style is way too intense. It all feels like we’re going to go to a crucial EL or Cup tie with Werner-Lankshear-Johnson and get embarrassed.

Gil isn't a consideration, that's just misdirection.

If Solanke is an improvement on Richy then the forward line is improved by however much that improvement is (plus Moore & potentially Lankshere are to be involved so a slight improvement in depth)

Not enough by any means and we should hopefully add more but your conclusion that the quoted scenario means we would be worse off attack wise is incorrect.

Good. Keep him AND buy Solanke.
Exactly. I’ve no idea where the “we have to sell Richy to buy Solanke” argument has come from but it’s idiotic. Reeks of ENIC-apologist Stockholm syndrome to think that way.

We’ll play 50 matches this season with Europa and cups. We need more than one half decent striker. The Solanke and Neto (striker and winger) signings should be budgeted in regardless. we should be able to afford two quality attackers with our PSR advantages.

Richy leaving is a bonus, one that should be reinvested into Eze or another quality attacker. What he does should not impact Solanke/Neto at all. If we sold Richy and replaced him with Solanke, we’re right back where we were in 21-22 with no real backup striker other than Son and no real quality on the wings. And trust me, Solanke is no Harry Kane.

It came from a Gary Jacobs tweet:

Granted this does not mean that we necessarily need to sell him to buy Solanke, but rather that we will sell him and buy Solanke, but people will interpret that as they will.

POK doesn’t know a ball from a banana. Veliz going tells us we are going to sign at least one striker.

Veliz was never going to make the squad given he would need to take up an 'overseas trained player' squad place with no likelihood of significant game time - which would make no sense.

Assuming we do sign a new striker it would likely mean either Solomon or Richarlison move on to make room for new striker in the squad (and that's after Veliz going on loan)

3 positives about our club in 2024.

Any real fan would find it easy to shoot straight on that (even if you have a hundred criticisms).

Go.
Well our form in 2024 would have us 13th I believe but I'll bite

Dragusin and Bergvall signings look good

Improved style of play - albeit naive to the extreme

Plenty of deadwood cleared out

I'll add the Synthetic turf partnership as a Brucie bonus

If we operate better , I'll praise it

Do you not believe the signings the last few seasons have been operating better than the 5 years previous?

Buys

Romero
Porro
VDV
Sarr
Udogie
Vicario
Maddison
Dragusin
Gray
Bergvall

I would say all good quality signings with high ceilings for many.

Obviously we have had some misses, everyone does though and there can't be an expectation for perfection.

Also we have been moving on our deadwood much better the last couple of years too.

So if operating better is what you want to see, then surely better has been achieved.

Not to say we are run as well or spend like we should...

OK so let’s just do the depth here, assuming Richy leaves and Solanke replaces him

LW: Son, Werner, Solomon, Moore?
CF: Solanke, Son, Lankshear?
RW: Johnson, Kulusevski

That’s nowhere near good enough as last season just proved. IMO we need 2 new attacking signings (Solanke/Neto) and to keep Richy.
