Chelsea had a better squad than us in 16/17 though.
Anyone trying to argue we had a better side quality wise on paper is deluded.

No European football helped, but we had no European football last season and we were still crap for large periods.

The quality of your first team and squad is and always will be the most important factor when it comes to winning trophies. (Leicester being the rare exception of course)

Courtois
Cahill Luiz Dave
Alonso Matic Kante Moses
Hazard Costa Pedro

Out of that lot I'd take Hazard and Kante.

It's not many minutes for Chiesa though.

Which is exactly why I don't really see what all the fuss is about. He will be a bench option for them and probably not even play that much in the prem.

Would I have preferred him to Werner? yes.
Does it make sense to break your wage structure for a spot in the rotation that might not always make the matchday squad? not at all. Especially when Werner is a loan so doesn't need to be shifted when you start bringing Mikey Moore through.

Chiesa will either win the battle with Diaz or Salah will pick up an injury. If not he's a 4 year contract on huge money that they have no chance to move on whilst riding the bench.

Phew, that's cleared that up.

I mourned Poch for years, but him joining Chelsea at the same time that Kane was leaving brought me closure.

Levy should have backed him more in 17-18, Poch should’ve been more compromising in terms of getting quality depth if his first option didn’t work out.

If this was Poch instead of Ange, no way does he approve Vicario (Raya) or Odobert (Nico/Neto) possibly even Van de Ven (Tapsoba). He seemed to operate on “this guy or nothing at all”.
As reported, yes...but by that time, you know, having paid for half the final stadium costs with his hard work and CL qualification, he had earned the right to finally get a few first-choice players.

That said, all this shit is rumor so we have no true idea. I'm generally against coaches being talent evaluators at the same time as coaching, e.g. Poch was balls to the wall for De Ligt and he's shit.

And, VDV is overrated by most on here (as well as Romero) and relies on his pace rather than reading the game or instincts...the same shit everyone crucified Walker for while he was here.

A month ago, people were laughing at the clubs recruitment strategy when there were links of Chiesa to Spurs. Calling it typical Spurs that we would end up with a "past-it" injury prone winger because he would cost us peanuts instead of going and signing "a game changer"

Are we suddenly going to pretend that wasn't the case because Liverpool are now on course to sign him?

I don't think many are saying too much. Liverpool are brimful.with attacking options already. Chiesa just adds to that.

A club like ours is completely mixed-up in my opinion and here's why.

Postecoglou says he is a winner. 2nd season and all that drivel.

As a club we probably have top 4 if not title anbitions.

We are also not a club who will be content with a finish below 6th, unless it's accompanied by a final appearance or progress in all competitions.

And then we have what we have, which is just mot going to deliver the above.

So I am just confused.

has anyone actually watched this dude play 20 actual league games here?

i only ask as he stats are quite ordinary for such a supposedly top player, not like he's playing for relegation fodder either. what's he missing?

27 years old and his best ever season is 8 goals and 8 assists, basically brennan johnson's output last season.
13 mill euro seems about right, we'll see how he does in league were ever defender is probably as fast if not faster, and stronger than he's used to
