I said exactly this about Maddison’s attempted tackle on Joelinton in the lead up to their winning goal. If he could have just stood him up for half a second then we could have got in better shape to cut out the crucial through ball.

Instead he crashed in trying to win the ball at the first attempt without thought or fear of what was happening behind him. I think in that particular situation the upside to winning that challenge was a lower level than the downside of losing it.

Postecoglu obviously trains the team to not try to analyze threat v opportunity. It’s always front foot go for the kill. Even if that means you’re likely to pull your own pants down in the process.

Hopefully we’re still in early stages of the plan and we can soon see a more considered approach.

I gave Romero shit after that goal (to be fair it was more for his reaction after the through ball) but having watched it subsequently the problem was definitely the forward press and this if often the problem with the counter goals we concede.

Although we are one of the most aggressive pressing teams by system, we have players in the front group that aren’t always smart about how/when they do it or do it well enough. These forward players are also some of the worst for coughing up the ball when we are piled forward.

I think we're conceding very high quality chances which is a problem.

But again, that's pretty fixable. Because those are just player error, not system.

Agree. The devil inn the detail is that our extremely low XGA (4.38) (lower than Woolwich's 4.50) is made up 2-3 high value XG chances, whereas Woolwich's is probably more but lower value. But to still have a lower XGA than the best defensive team in the league (albeit after a small sample size) shows that we are doing things better.

Personally I individual errors have been more to blame than the system so far this season, and Romero hasn't been far from all of them.

This is a good thread read, and adds yet more to the call for better wide players.

(It also explains to those who don’t understand why Pep wanted and uses Doku so much)

This was obvious to anyone that’s watched us play in the last year. Yet we haven’t bought him a proven single one. It’s why I hated the signing of Werner so much, because I knew it meant we wouldn’t get what was needed with him clogging up a squad place.

But we’ve done it with every manager since Jol. I remember when he wanted a holding midfielder in Boateng from M’boro but he got bought Kevin prince boateng instead!

Data all looks good but we can all see the main issues.

We have wingers who are incapable of taking a man on 1v1 and are built for a counter attacking style.

And a defender who is leaking us goals every game that we can't afford to concede because we ain't scoring enough.

A midfield that other then Bissouma when he's in form can't break the lines. An out of form Madison who is either not as good as we think he is or because teams know he's the only threat in forward areas is constantly being crowded out.

We also insist on playing everything into a congested middle of the park and can't break a low block down.

Fix to a layman would seem to be drop Romero. Play Odobert who although far from the finished article looks like he can provide us more then Johnson and Kulu can on the right. Get a winger to cover Son who although a legend at the club is obviously aging and not suited to the new style.

And also develop a Plan B whatever it may be to keep teams guessing. Cause at the moment the plan to beat us is simple.

Sit deep frustrate and wait for the eventual fuck up at the back that comes at least 3 times a game.

We also have issues with the GK situation because Vic despite being a great shot stopper is awful in the air and that's a huge part of PL football. Willing to give him time obviously but again in the moment this is costing us.

Some of this can be fixed now with dropping out of form players or tweaking the system. But a lot of the issues IMO lay with the players we have. Issue is our recruitment this summer was all high potential kids that don't solve any current issues.
