I’m all for attacking football but at times we have to be able to sit deep and soak up pressure. Look at Brennan’s goal on the counter last night. Given the right context I wouldn’t mind giving this a go when needed. Still attacking yet a little more pragmatic. We’re to predictable otherwise.

Vic
Porro— Romaro- VDV- Udogie
Biss—- Bentencur
Madison- Dekie
Son- Dom

Brennan's goal came from our 6 pushing up to press the Coventry guy near the halfway line, not from sitting deep.

We've been doing this more than anyone in this league, problem is we usually fuck up the next bit (through ball) or the forward fucks up the shot bit.

Regardless, point being we should try playing longer through balls, balls over the top etc. let our forwards run through the channels onto a pass occasionally.

Our build up play from the back is to slow and predictable. Sonny, though not at his best, still has legs in him. Johnson is quick as hell. Play to there strengths. Let them run onto a ball. We could try that without breaking shape all that much. Wether it’s from sitting deep or a counter attack.

That goal last night was exactly what we are trying to do, force turnovers before the oppo get set in position, create overloads, so people like Son and Johnson can do what Johnson did last night, or whip a ball across to the other one from in behind.

It's not our build up from the back that's slow per se (though with people like Bentancur, Sarr and Kulusevski in the midfield it definitely can be) it's that we are rarely getting pressed high up these days. Our build up is being forced into a 30 yard section of condensed pitch. If you watch any team, the best teams like ManC included, playing against the bus always requires patience and or top quality to break down. We really, really need to add some quality, especially players who are good 1v1 (why City buy players like Doku and Mahrez etc) to open up and move defenders around.

Once you get 1-0, 2-0 you can then exploit a longer game because the opponents are forced to come out and commit more men to attacking.

I have a few questions for the tactical astute fellas out there about Postecoglou system.

Who’s creating space in this system and who is attacking that space? What should happen when these patterns don’t work?

Who is going to create our chances and who is going to be at the end of it? What happens when these designated players are not on form?

Who is creating width and how are we taking advantage of that?

Did yesterday answer any of these questions for you?
