It was in good faith. I expected some of the people who keep posting stats around here to answer some of those questions.

Many of the questions are reductive though.

Space is clearly, as can be seen in at least 3 of our last 4 goals, being created through the high intensity press, turnover over the ball when the opposition is setting itself for an offensive move.

If you're asking how we are trying to create space when 11 men are camped behind the ball.... see Bissoumas goal vs Everton, Porros vs Leciester and Johnsons/own goal vs Necastle. Johnson missed a similar chance to that own goal vs Leciester too. The evidence is there, there seems to be moments of blackout for you when they happen.

Who is going to create our chances.... we have scored 9 goals this season.... have you seen them? Who created those chances? We've also had the 2nd most shots on target in the league I believe.... who created those chances?

Again. Who is creating width? This isn't stats thing this is.... none of this is, these are questions easily answered by watching the game...

Do you watch us play?

Still only 5 games, but we’ve now (5.28) got the 3rd best xga (expected goals against) in the league behind Liv (4.36) and ManC (4.82).

And you can see why when you watch us play. Most of the time the press either turns people over or by the time they have got past it their chances of a high xG chance are massively reduced because there is no numbers advantage. our weak spot has been when teams break the press but neither the gooners nor Brentford managed to do that much, if at all.

IMO it's repeatable as long as Ange can rotate enough players into the team regularly to keep everyone fresh. Obviously there will need to be some players playing every week but I guess those will be CBs, the GK and maybe Kulusevski who seems to be settling into a rhythm of staying fit despite covering ridiculous amounts of grass. The FBs, Maddison and the forwards I feel like Ange will be looking to keep fresh with subs and rotation in Europe/Cups.

Do you know what it was like after our first 5 games last season?
First 5 matches 2023/24 xGA was: 2.2 vs BRE, 2.1 vs MUN, 0.7 vs BOU, 1.3 vs BUR and 0.7 vs SHU = 7.0 total.

Against equivalent opposition it was 0.8 vs LUT away, 1.8 vs EVE home, 2.8 vs NEW away, 1.0 vs ARS home and 1.6 vs BRE home = 8.0, equivalent to 61 goals conceded over a season, which is coincidentally exactly where we finished.

This season so far it's 1.0 vs LEI away, 1.0 vs EVE home, 1.8 vs NEW away, 0.7 vs ARS home and 0.8 vs BRE home = 5.3, equivalent to 40 goals conceded over a season.

Attacking xG for the equivalent games last season was 1.9 vs LUT away, 1.5 vs EVE home, 0.8 vs NEW away, 2.3 vs ARS home and 2.9 vs BRE home = 9.4, equivalent to 71 goals over a season, not far off our 74 actual. This season 1.2 + 2.4 + 1.2 + 0.7 + 3.5 = 9.0, equivalent to 68 goals over a season so need to work on shot creation but we already knew that.

Mad to me that anyone can look at that chart and see the obvious correlation between PPDA going down and possession going up but still think that possession and pressing aren’t related and we only have possession because teams allow us to have the ball.

You seem in capable of compression. you seem a very binary thinker. Two things can be true. Its not hard even for people of so little nuance.

From the EPL tactics site.

Spurs are finding that many of their opponents are happy to concede possession and territory against them, with the aim of launching direct attacks when opportunities arise.

Prehaps you spent too long on line and can't see its not always some hill to die on. Sides adjust partways because we have been so good at one element. Our pressing being effect means we turn over and retain the football in the face of such efficacy coaches simply say concede some territory restriction contesting it and sit in a low central block. We have become less potent because teams are not being drawn out to track Udogie and Porro as they initially did. YOU are one repeating the mantra possession and press not related. Not what I claimed and I speak for myself alone.

Mate, read the chart.

Across all teams, the better you press, the more possession you have.

The correlation is plain as day.

“Spurs finding that teams are happy to concede possession is data editorial and narrative building. There’s not a single quote from a manager saying they were happy to give Spurs the ball.
