Match Tottenham Hotspur vs. Manchester City, 20:15 GMT, Wednesday 30th October. League Cup Round of 16

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

Tbh id drop a few players after palace debacle. Udogie has been poor all season. We need a back up player for him. Johnson id drop as was anonymous. Bentacur in for bissouma, and sarr to replace kulu with kulu replacing johnson.

This is a bit off-topic I know, but surely Jose's sacking was in some way linked to the 'proposed then immediately collapsed' super-league wasn't it?

IIRC (and maybe I don't), the super-league was announced on the Thursday or Friday, then by Sunday night several teams had pulled out of it. Levy had made it clear previously that he wanted it, whereas I thought Jose was vocal that weekend about not wanting it (?) ; Jose was then sacked on the Monday morning, and we announced that we'd pulled out of the super-league on the Tueday morning. Not sure how much of that is actually what happened, versus how much was just hearsay (and apologies if it's more the former than the latter - I've not looked any of that up, I'm just going by memory). But either way, with Jose being sacked within a day of us withdrawing from the super-league and apologising for 'making a mistake', I find it hard to believe that the two weren't at least partially connected...
Possibly but I don’t think so. The players hated the little cunt

btw how on earth did a match thread for a match that hasn't even happened yet already descend into a 'should we sack Ange' thread? Surely that should all be on the Ange thread, or perhaps the Palace game thread, or at a push, the ENIC thread. 🤷‍♂️

God knows what we should be hoping for team-wise. Many on here wanted Moore to start against Palace (I've always thought a home game might have been better for his first start, maybe Ipswich coming up would have been perfect...). Those who played at the weekend didn't look up for it. BUT it's the first time this season we've really said that about a whole game for our first team (Coventry cup game was similar, but they were mostly reserve players) - so maybe they should be allowed another chance. If City are going weak (well, weak by their standards) then I hope we go full strength and at least have a go. They are the only big side who we've got a good record against! (Linking back to the Mourinho conversation, the one time City actually turned up against us had to be the fucking cup final didn't it... We either tactically out-thought them, or just got lucky against them, so many other games, it couldn't have happened in that one could it... :( ).

Vicario
Porro - Romero - Van de Ven - Udogie
Bentancur - Kulu - Maddison
Johnson - Solanke - Son

I know we looked like we needed more presence in the middle at the weekend, but City are less physical than Palace, plus they won't have Rodri (though admittedly Kovacic sometimes looks a reasonable replacement...). In any case, Kulu is strong, he was as poor as everyone else at the weekend, but he shouldn't get bullied by City any more than anyone else in our side.

If we do play a strong side and still lose, then we'll all probably be wishing we rested some in order to have better chance against Villa on Sunday, but hey ho, sometimes you're damned if you do and you're damned if you don't... :/

We rested our team in the EL only for our regulars not to turn up yesterday. Far as I am concerned our regulars can play both City and Villa, they should easily have enough energy.
I don't think our players, or probably any players for that matter, can give Ange what he wants every game three starts in a row. Maybe 2, but def not 3...

Start our best XI here and we'll pay for it v Villa- a game we desperately need to win.

That's not what I asked... I simply asked if he'd have finished 6th (i.e. after all 38 games) you think he def. would have been sacked?

Fact is there's no precedent for your original claim.
If we got pipped on the final day and finished 6th below Chelsea I don't think he gets sacked.

But again, that's because we were in a position for 4th and fell down.

The precedent set was with Poch, Mourinho and Nuno. They were sacked for their league form sending us outside the top 5 ish.
The only exception since our burst to being a European regular was Conte, who left little option but to be sacked and arguably could have got top 5 again.

Poch: We were 14th FFS!
Nuno: 8th (whilst many suspect he was only ever a place-holder while Conte got his end together.)
Jose: 7th + Zagreb disaster > Players had had enough of him.

..........Still waiting for ANY evidence of 6th being the threshold.

I think 6th in the context of Man United winning the FA Cup and taking our Europa League spot would have greatly diminished Ange's standing with the fans. 5th and a Europa League spot is good. 6th and Chelsea laughing at us - not good.

I know that wouldn't have been Ange's fault and I doubt that Levy would have sacked him over it but I think he loses fan support on that one. We need to feel that a manager has our back when it comes to Woolwich, Chelsea and West Ham and if we don't, it's not going to last.

But, yes, I agree that 6th isn't a categoric red line for a managerial sacking. Levy is far more sensitive to context than that. He didn't sack Ramos when we finished 11th despite some appalling league form because we had every reason to believe that Ramos would sort everything out over the summer. In hindsight, there were some very clear signs that the team was in freefall and that Ramos wasn't going to fix the problems. The league cup win may have clouded things for both the fans and the board.

All this worry about our players not being able to play Wednesday and Sunday. We have played much changed sides in the Europa but Villa have played 3 CL matches and whilst I do not know what team they put out I expect it must have been pretty strong. In past years we have rested players or had longer gap between matches and ended up losing like against Palace.
Whatever team MC put out we must go strong. The only one that has played a lot is Udogie and perhaps rest him but I assume Spence not available,
I will be angry if Ange makes a lot of changes and it would signal to me that a trophy is not a priority. We need to score early and get a lead as I expect Pep will bring on his stars in the 2nd half and we will have to hang on.
We need to make a statement to the players and fans that winning a cup is a priority because I do not believe it has been for years hence our failure.
Not sure how long training lasts each day or its intensity but with the way Ange makes early subs many starters only play an hour which they should be able to cope with as many are young.

Suddenly become an even bigger game for the coach. He needs a win against a decent team not Carrier bag. Levy fell pretty hard for his Paul Hogan shtick, needs to at least start looking like we are moving forward not back because or all looks pretty much like regression. With lots of his oponent very happy indeed with Ange ball, the last two Germans have fully seen where to pick the seam.

Come off it 😂

You and I both know if we beat a second string City team, that'll be the excuse used.

Nightmare draw really to have this 3 days before Villa. Both feel like must wins if I'm being honest. I still think we have to rotate here and just hope that City rotate too. My team would be as below:

Forster
Gray Dragusin VDV Spence
Sarr Bentancur Kulusevski
Odobert Richarlison Moore

I assumer Forster is getting all these cup games and we have to play Spence here and he is not available for Europe. Rich and Bentancur are no brainers to rotate in for Biss and Solanke. I think Gray deserves this start. IBrennan been poor lately so hoping to see Odobert start if ready. Assume Son will be rested for the Villa game.

Why is villa a must win and why should we rotate ? Villa are better than us, they are going to finish above us. Why not just take advantage that we could knock the favourites out of this cup and try and win it ?

The reality is This game is far more important than the game against villa at weekend. The only reason I can think that some people think other wise , is they that still hold out a glimmer of hope that we can qualify for the CL… surely people can see that is not going to happen
