Erm.. the second half was fairly shit as well for the first 25 mins. We gave the ball away and they missed chance after chance.
It was only once he took Madders and Bergvall off and brought on Bents and Sarr (giving us an actual midfield for the first time in the game) coupled with them being tired THEN we got into the game and had a go showing some good heart with 10.

But we have to talk about giving the ball away and being soft as shit on the road.
The midfield we started with just didn’t work , if we started one of bents , Sarr or Kulu as well it would have been a better performance however we don’t see these guys in training and it might have been they just couldn’t start today and start on Sunday as well!
Bergvail looked poor and I think that’s the reason he hasn’t seen more minutes in the league but Gray looks class , also I think barring the red card we can let Richie go in the summer and stick with Big Willie

Oh fucking hell look who is back. Mr disappearing act after the Villa game.

The main takeaway is how exposed our squad got with those few injuries. Richarlison, Odobert, Werner/Moore plus one CB rotated not two, Davies at RB, Gray at LB and we probably would have enough to match them as well as rotate heavily.
What we've witnessed today was a horrible mix of not ready for it youngsters and disinterested off it first team players that altogether looked like they've never played together which makes sense because they never have.
A few had a shocker but the one who should be ashamed of himself really is Maddison. He's done absolutely nothing and isn't a kid and wasn't dealing with Osimhen.
But at the end of the day, fuck it, bring on Ipswich.

I mean, I feel for him and even Dier personally, because I know what it is like to be a defender that is just getting done by pace or being asked to play out from the back when it is not on. I think he is instinctively a good defender, blocks shots in the box, he just would be better at Stoke.

As for the data-led approach, I do believe in it. However, our data-led recruitment has been poor ever since Pochettino signed his last contract with us, or our top recruitment guys went to Liverpool. For example, if you looked at the data of the N'Dombele signing, it was obvious at the time the man couldn't tackle and we were crying out for a defensive Kante-like midfielder. He was the player that played in front of Kante and beside him, he wasn't the Kante or Rodri player we needed and could have bought after the CL final.

Honestly I doubt I could play in Ange's style of team as a defender. And it is actually hard to recruit for. Unless you have the four best fastest high line ball playing centre-backs in the league, it doesn't work.
He lacks pace, and ability on the ball, but he also isn't the smartest. A lot of these balls/crosses in behind him he is in a terrible position. Either or all of square on, not anticipating or aware of opponents, and ball watching.

He's a bit of a blinkers on meathead. Can tussle and kick/head/tackle at close quarters, but that's about it. He's basic beyond belief.

The style of play does demand a lot of the centre backs, but other teams manage to do it with centre backs that aren't Olympic-level sprinters. It would help enormously if we controlled the ball a bit more and cut down turnovers, which in turn would be helped by having improved shape in build up to play the ball out more easily and with more options. At the moment they are very precise patterns that give only certain options to the man on the ball, and organised presses deal with fairly easily.

In fairness, we haven't seen Gray in midfield at all. In pre-season he looked solid, when played in midfield.

Other than that, our second string STILL looks far from decent sadly.

A top team in the PL should be able to rotate without looking absolute rubbish like we have the last 10 seasons.

Like i've said for years, when we rotate we can lose against Newport. And that is NOT acceptable if we want to take the next step.
I think our biggest problem is we have let the first team get so poor last few seasons we have had to concentrate on that , the good thing is last few years we have been buying a lot better so hopefully our squad gets better , also you need things like EL to give squad players minutes and see who can hack it.
It’s also a lot harder being a PL team as we played city and villa last 10 days where gala rested , however I’m sure they would happily play our schedule if they got the same money we do !
