In the EL we can swap Werner for a CF.
What happens if Solanke gets injured and /or Richy breaks down again? I like Big Will but can he suddenly be first choice in the EL and domestic games?
Again, what happens if Drag gets injured? Dorrington, who has not even started a game?
And if Biss gets injured while Bents is out? Olusesi?
We need minimum 3 in.
If Kolo Mauni comes in, Lankshear has to go on loan for the second half of the season, hopefully to the Championship. He just needs minutes now and plenty of them.

That is what I thought when I started the analysis. And we definitely need to upgrade the positions you mention. But with Romero, VdV and Davies all back in a couple of weeks, Richy already back, and Spence and Gray's emergence. But most importantly, we can only register one more new player for the Europa League (assuming Spence and Kinksy are added), even if we remove players (it is 1 in 1 out). Why get a new CF if you cannot register him to play in the EL? I just think the strategic upgrades are better left to the summer (e.g. getting a better CB to cover Romero / VdV). In the summer there will be a bigger pool of available players more suited to our playing style. If we can bring forward signing a target identified by the recruitment team this window (like we did with Kinsky) then I would go for it.

Nice detailed post but I do not agree with your conclusions.
We absolutely need a permanent CB, DM and a minimum loan striker.
Bissouma is unreliable and who knows how long Bentacur will be out for?
I believe in Richarlison but can he stay fit?
We are playing with 2 reserve CBs.
In the EL, we need a goal scorer as our 3rd pick.
We have loads of scope for adding to our domestic squad with 3 competitions to deal with and loans may be the best policy.
A (loan) striker, perm CB and DM urgently required this window.

Hmmmm, we may well have 3 CB's back from injury before the end of January, so if we talk to a new CB how do we explain where he is in the pecking order ? Do we say 'you are a starter for next 3 weeks but might be 4th choice by end of January ..... with Gray also able to play CB, and Spence looking surprisingly good at CB when he played v Newcastle.

And with Spence looking fantastic at LB (and Gray also able to play there), the urgency for a new LB when we were reliant upon Udogie with Davies as a back up, the urgency even for a LB seems to have got a lot less.

I can certainly see the advantage of getting another defender in, but where do we want them to play ? ATM I wonder if longer term another LB/RB able to cover both positions, giving us Porro, Udogie, Spence and 'newboy' might be the way forwards ? Then look at our CB's in the summer when we have Romero, Ven de Ven, Dragusin, Davies and returning loanees Phillips and Vuscovic to see who is staying and who is going before deciding what we need.

And with our CB's coming back, we suddenly have as CM's - Gray, Bissouma, Bentancur, Sarr and Bergvall (5 players) plus Kulusevski and Maddision ...... plus maybe Devine returning in summer. So do we need another DM now - unless say Bissouma is moving on ?

The case for another forward is a lot stronger with Werner's loan ending in summer and very unlikely to be made permanent on current performances, so we have Solanke, Johnson and Son only physically able to play once a week plus Richarison (will he return and show he can score goals as LW/CF ? ) and Odobert (will his injury have changed how he can play ?).

So worst case we might be looking at us having 2.5 forwards in the summer, best case 4,6 forwards (plus of course youngsters Moore, Lankshear and Yang who may contribute this and next season but not hold down a full time position).

So a forward able to cover any of the 3 forward positions (ability to rotate and rest any of them) could be ideal.
