Player Heung-Min Son (손흥민)

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

the time to sell for football reasons would of been a few years ago when we would of got 80m. the question is, has he actually brought more than that to the club in revenue, after his wages. if he has then obviously would of been wise to keep him, but hes playing far too many minutes, his ability does not warrant anywhere near the amount he's getting now.

spurs are so bad at letting players go, that even without his korean following and cash cow capabilities, we would of still kept him without the revenue he brings. a well run club knows when to cash out on players at the right time.

Sonny's as knackered as anyone in the team, I haven't given up on him just yet

He's looked incredibly ineffective for an extremely long time now, including the back end of last season. That's a very long stretch of just being tired/bad form/whatever other excuse.

I find it odd because he's clearly a good professional and has stayed fit, and he's not that old. But the sharpness just isn't there for him anymore.

27 goal involvements in 35 games last year, and he's been pulling up trees for South Korea too.

He's always going to be a pretty imperfect Angeball player because quick one-two touch football in tight spaces has never been where he excelled, but the guy knows where the goal is, age doesn't take that away from players who really have it.

💯

He has a goal involvement every 118 minutes in the PL this season.

That’s a very productive player.

He's ebbed and flowed in terms of his goal return for his entire career and he's prone to the odd miserable performance (he was wretched against Everton), plus like everyone with two working legs in this squad he's very evidently tired.

But he still scares every defender in this league, and the goals aways come eventually.

I think he has slowed down I think it’s a combination of.

1 loss of explosive power
2 Kane who was so smart and knew his runs going
3 playing for a manager who needs actual out and out winger

I don’t think Son has the speed for the wing anymore, he can’t play CF as he can’t hold the ball up. He needs to play as a second striker off the main striker where he can drift into dangerous areas and shoot. If we are keeping or Ange or getting a new manager that uses wingers and only one striker he is done here. If the manager however uses 352 then he could still be useful.

Sonny’s job is to create goals - for himself and others. He has 12 goal contributions in the PL so far - one every 118 minutes. His production still puts him among the top wingers in the league.

in the current system his job is also to retain the ball, to run the full backs, to press well and to hold width. Neither him or Johnson appear to be able to do it that well and that causes big structural issues. We don’t press or retain the ball as well as we should and that gives us a lot less control. It wasn’t for nothing that Moore coming on against Everton and we started to play better.

I don’t think we can afford both Son and Johnson on the pitch at the same time, we have to little control or ability to break down the opposition. This is why Odoburt’s injury was so bad for us, he has the skills that fit our system. If Son is on the pitch then the other winger needs to be Odoburt or maybe Moore to balance.

We need players of Son’s ability in the squad. I think he’s at the point now where he’s not starter material but we have no one better. I’d like him to retire here tbh with at least one trophy under his belt. He’ll do a job coming on after 60mins, especially in the big games. Best finisher at the club

Agree but I think you forgot another thing that really benefited him in the past also: a legit overlapping wingback. Son has no width around him and with the underlapping FBs constantly has to run into an even more packed box than he should.

He's still a very effective winger- for 60-70 mins a game though.

He's being asked to check back and receive the ball at his feet (with his back to the opponents' goal), and to defend opposing fullbacks deep in our own half... which are two things he is objectively poor at.

TBF, the same could be said about Johnson.

He's a "super-sub" 20-30 minute player IMO... until further notice.

Needs specific coaching instructions and capped minutes- but I'd still say he's starter quality for us- at least until we get somebody actually better.
The only way we get someone better than peak Son is if we luck out with Moore coming through the academy and reaching his potential (which he might).
Odobert looks a talent as well but the truth is peak Son is world class and Levynomics doesn't sign world class players when they are world class.
