Chelsea made a late attempt to steal Mathys Tel from Tottenham

According to L’Equipe, Chelsea actually made a late play to sign Mathys Tel before he arrived in N17 to sign for Tottenham on loan until the end of the season.

Tottenham signed Tel with an option to buy, an exciting youngster who Bayern Munich didn’t expect to lose at the beginning of the window.

But according to the report, Chelsea tried to hijack Tel’s loan move to Spurs when he was waiting at the airport to fly to London.

Unfortunately for Maresca’s side, it was too late and Tel had already chosen a move to north London.

Of course, Spurs’ rivals Woolwich were also interested in a move for Tel in the final days of the window.

But ultimately Woolwich decided not to pursue Tel, a club who have gambled on the fitness of Kai Havertz for the rest of the season.
Wankers

Think it's an exciting signing for the rest of the season for a talented player that fits into exactly what we're currently missing.

If it works out the loan fee means nothing and we've got a pretty high chance of signing a top player who's theoretically enjoying football in London , if it doesn't work out there's no transfer fee.

Surely we can just glass half full this one for the rest of the season:ange-arms:

Insane amount of cope from Utd fans saying that we overpaid on the loan deal which is hilarious in itself because that's all that club ever fucking do on transfers 😆

Time will tell if we have overpaid but who gives a shit, if he smashes it it will be worth it and we will hopefully buy him if not then we won't take up the option.

Mathys Tel reveals why he made Tottenham transfer over Woolwich and Man Utd

Mathys Tel believes Tottenham were "the best option" after choosing to reject interest from Manchester United and Woolwich.

In the final days of the transfer window it became clear that Tel would be leaving Bayern Munich, where he's struggled for game time. A host of Premier League sides pursued his signature but it was those on the white half of north London who eventually won the race at the eleventh hour.

Tel moves to Tottenham on loan initially, but the club can make the move permanent later down the line. The Frenchman originally said no to moving to Ange Postecoglou's side, but a phone call from the Australian manager helped turn his head.

Woolwich and United failed to back up their initial interest with the Red Devils opting against paying the loan fee Bayern wanted. Tel has cited the desire and the commitment from Tottenham as a real difference maker in making his choice.

He said: "Why I chose Tottenham, because that was the best option for me, what was important for me. I felt the commitment, I spoke with the president [chairman Daniel Levy], talked with the manager. I'm young, I've started to grow up and this was the best option for me and I'm very happy.

"I'm very excited to play with my team-mates, for the fans. That's a new challenge for me, a new chapter to open. Very excited about it."

Tel also sought advice from two of his former Bayern colleagues - Harry Kane and Eric Dier. The duo have more than 800 appearances for Tottenham between them and spoke glowingly about the prospect of moving to north London
“They said, if you want to work here, you have everything," claimed Tel. "You can enjoy it. That’s good for me, because it’s a good opportunity to work, to learn every day... that’s what they told me.”

Tottenham were in need of new recruits with the club's form over the last two months seeing them tumble down the table. They now find themselves in 14th spot after just two wins in 12 but Tel's arrival may help add more speed to their attack.

The teenager explained what he thinks he can bring to the team as he added: "I think I am a physical player, fast, technical. I play every moment, every game with my heart. I live with this pressure. I always have to push myself to go up and look forward."

I think the truth lies somewhere "in between"....but it would be extra sweet if Tel turn into a huge hit for Spurs if Woolwich actually did turn down the chance to sign Tel...

Why Woolwich didn’t challenge Tottenham for Mathys Tel despite ‘conversations’ about him at N5

Woolwich were linked with a new forward for much of the January transfer window, but ended up signing nobody by the time the market closed.

Woolwich did try their luck with a bid for Ollie Watkins, but Aston Villa swiftly rejected their offer and nothing more came of it.

There were also links between Woolwich and Mathys Tel. TBR Football understands Tel’s camp encouraged Woolwich to make a move, but they opted against it.

This allowed Tottenham Hotspur to swoop in and sign Tel on loan from Bayern Munich, just days after Tel initially rejected Spurs.

Now, Charles Watts has lifted the lid on the links between Woolwich and Tel, as well as the interest they had in Watkins.

Woolwich rejected Mathys Tel as they wanted an out-and-out striker

Watts admitted that Woolwich were never actually that close to signing a new attacker in the January transfer window.

The journalist acknowledged that there was “genuine interest” in Ollie Watkins, but not at the price Villa would have wanted for him.

Meanwhile, there were conversations at Woolwich about Tel, but the Gunners wanted an out-and-out striker rather than someone who prefers to play off the left.

“From my understanding they were never really that close to signing an attacker in January,” Watts wrote on CaughtOffside.

“There was genuine interest in Watkins late on in the window, but never really at the price that Aston Villa would have been looking for.

“Had Villa come back to the table in the last couple of days I think Woolwich would have looked to get something done closer to their £40million valuation, but that never happened and never even looked like happening once Jhon Duran was sold.

“There was lots of chatter about Mathys Tel, but I was told that one never really got off the ground.

“There were some conversations given his obvious availability, but Woolwich were focused more on exploring moves for an out and out striker, rather than a forward who can play centrally but prefers to play off the left as they already believed they are well stocked in that area.”

What Tel could’ve brought to Woolwich

Admittedly, Woolwich are well stocked in terms of players who can play all across the front line.

However, Tel has been earning comparisons to Thierry Henry and, as such, the Gunners should maybe have considered this.

Football Talent Scout gave Tel a 10 out of 10 for potential in 2021, deeming him a “world-class” prospect, and compared him to Thierry Henry.

Kulig also deemed Tel a “complete forward” as well as a “well rounded player who has all the qualities to play on many other positions and attacking roles”.

And when we play him as a striker because that’s really what he is…

Has Tel's international clearance come through yet? I don't think he can even train with us until it does and unless he's trained at least once (which would have to be today) I'd be very surprised if he's even in the squad tomorrow.

God I hate that pathetic piece of shit chav club.

Hope their stadium and all their facilites burn to ash.

Please tell me you are taking the piss..

This is the most bizarre angle yet, there are now suddenly football players who look at the scoreboard before taking a shot and apparently their shooting gets better when there is no scoreboard pressure. Peak data analytics!
Wait, you think a 6th goal in the 85th minute is as hard to score a the 1st goal in the 10th minute?

Are you serious?

Levy conversation.

Levy: Mr Tel we have a wonderful project, the stadium is amazing, you will love the food stands, our project is to build a hotel and one day possibly a cheese room. ENIC have grown the asset beyond Mr Lewis’s wildest dreams, all thanks to me, we have achieved great value and our wage to turnover ratio is the best in the league. The training ground has a sauna and stunning towels, only the best towels. Newts live close by in our nature reserve. So what do you think?

Tel: Nah you good.

Ange: Mr Tel, you are quick, strong and we play hard and fast, you will get lots of game time up top. So you coming mate?

Tel:fuck it, why not I need to play.

Obviously this is tongue in cheek and a bit shit but I honestly don’t think it would be that different to what actually occurred.

You talking appearances or per 90? He had an absurd goals per minute ratio last season and this year you can't really judge because the manager changed and he came off the bench every time.
What I can judge is that when Tel comes off the bench; the defenders playing against him will often have played more minutes in that game than Tel.

Tel has averaged 1 goal every 5 games against players who have played for more minutes and may be 'fatigued' like Porro often is in these situations.

1 goal every 5 games will not help this Spurs team in my opinion.

It may initially help the miser to shift unwanted megadome tickets for meaningless Premier League fixtures.

Innit.

Yes but when he starts he gets more minutes. You have been shown his stats per minute but for some obscure reason you want to ignore them.

If you don't want to believe the player is any good that's completely up to you mate but why bother pretending you want to have a conversation about it?
