The Europa is a great tournament to win.
Second tier to CL for sure but it gets the winners into the CL and it’s the stuff that European failures like Woolwich would love to have in their trophy cabinet.
It would be the greatest achievement of this club since 1984..
Getting to a CL final and losing is not the same as winning a major trophy.
It's only really mattered since CL football was the prize.
Before that, it was a massive drain of resources with very little to show for it.

I’d rather win an actual trophy than get to the final of one.

I know the CL is more prestigious than the EL, but how can it be better to be runner up in one than actually winning the other one!

That’s literally like putting “we came second though” in a trophy cabinet.
What are you talking about?

If referring to me saying the epic comeback in the CL semi was a high point of the last 10years, ummmm. We didn’t win anything else. Winning Europa this season would trump that, but we’re not even in the QF yet and form suggests we’ll need a miracle to get past that stage.

Also toe to toe knocking City out in the QF was superior to a Top4 finish, for me (and most others I’d think).

Imagine Spurs actually winning something - anything - and then telling the manager he needs to go away and learn some new skills. Fuck me lol.

This is gonna be your best season in years and years and yeeeeeears. Embrace it.

:ange-arms:
I know it’s an odd situation. A good example is ten Haag. We all knew he was out of his depth & would just make united even more of a mess. But he won the FA cup against their rivals. So it saved him his job & you can’t blame them for not sacking him after winning the fa cup. But then he spent a lot on the summer on his picks. Most look average at best & they are in a bigger mess.
So in hindsight they should have sacked him the summer.
Also Jose got us to a final & is the best at winning finals. Yet levy sacked him a week before!
I’d be over the moon with a cup hence me wanting enic & levy gone. So we can actually win some.

Yeah, I have no good memories of that CL final. In fact I kind of wiped it out my memory. Same with all our cup final loses.

So we'd have 1/7th of the Europa league titles of Seville. Wow. Massive feat while still competing with the likes of Everton in the league.
I make Seville having won it 7 times, and us winning it for what would be the 3rd time 3/7th's, but you do you.

And I was there for both legs when we won that competition in 1984, and out in Ajax and Madrid in 2019.
Winning UEFA Cup was bigger and more memorable achievement than losing to Liverpool in final (although to be fair, won't ever forget the Ajax night). In fact in Amsterdam had lunch with Kaveh Solekul, he said to me "this must be Spurs biggest ever match", the CL Semi, I said "no, any final is bigger than any semi"

We’d have 43% of the total ELs that Sevilla have

Ten Hag finished top 4 and won Carabao in year 1. Also got the FA Cup final.

Then finished 8th and won the FA Cup in year 2.

I’ve never really understood why he’s used as the boogey man when you can clearly see they’ve got worse and further from winning anything since they sacked him.

Not even played the round of 16 yet and some of you lot are already talking like we’ve got the trophy in the bag. When are you lot going to learn.

So weird. As if we weren’t total shit against United as well and weren’t completely underwhelming during most of the EL so far.

Let’s beat a team better than AZ Alkmaar in Europe before we start discussing whether we’d enjoy it or not if we won the whole thing, eh?

No because as soon as you remove the first 10 games the form goes out the window.

But if you put those 10 games in we finish 5th. Which is now a matter of record. I mean if you can take out the best 10 game run why can't someone counter with taking out the worst 10 game run? It's a silly game really.

Similarly, we were 5th after we beat City away which, once Vic went down, was the start of our genuine injury crisis because since that game we haven't had our first choice keeper and first choice centre backs. And it's only got worse since.

SO in a conversation about where evidence suggest our "stable limit" is with a full, healthy squad - the available evidence suggests around 5th.

The fact is we have lost way too many games. Even if we win the Europa League. Ange should be gone.

His tactics are unsustainable because of the reliance on the high press.

That is a different discussion and one I don't necessarily disagree with - except to say if Ange wins Europa League it's incredibly unlikely he'll be sacked. And rightly so. I just don't think he will win EL - can't see any evidence that we can reach that level.

My view is this.
If you're going to change your philosophy due to injury, then you already don't believe in your philosophy. Punters call him naive, but what is really going on, is he is imebedding it irrespective of the situation.

If you are the manager and you have seen the evidence, in other leagues, and against other teams (man u, city AND liverpool as wins) that the system works. You're not going to change.

You're also not going to revert to 'safe' just because there are injuries... Why? Well, whether you finish 6-16th it doesn't matter. Scrapping for a draw here or there.. is essentially meaningless. That is why he is not changing... it's short term pain for long term pain, and the average (and yes... i mean average) punter who is starved of 'expected' success - find it difficult to look at the long term, they want immediate evidence and success irrespective of context.

Ange already alluded to it in the press conference... it takes 2 years minimum to turn things around. We're 18 months in.
There’s having an overall philosophy in the way you play, but you also need some flexibility to tweak that depending on the opposition, in-game situation and the personnel available.

Having one blueprint of how you play irrespective of circumstances makes you very easy to play against once you’ve been figured out.

Look how Everton scored their first goal with Porro probably one of the furthest players forward.

Ferguson would change the way United played during the same match dependent on the phase of the game.

Managers that aren’t flexible won’t survive in this league IMHO. Amorim will likely get the bullet by unbendingly sticking to his football principles, as will probably Ange.

You can take any screenshot then of the season. I could even say we were 15th before the weekend so that is our Level under Ange.

Ange has too many flaws in his tactics to be a long term success.
