Match Ipswich (A) - 22nd February - 3PM KICK OFF, AN ACTUAL 3PM KICK OFF

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

I didn't say that refereeing was perfect, or that his performance was great - far from it, it was inconsistent and the incident in question was mind boggling.
My point was that refereeing is just as accurate or incompetent across the board for all teams and yet all supporters hysterically conclude that any judicial error has to be perceived as collusion and premeditated corruption.

I don't think it is across the board for all teams. Whether it's narrative-based or some kind of weird PGMOL perceptions, some teams and players get whistled dofferently. Fans of every team in the country think Joelinton and Newcastle or Yates and Forest get away with murder every week. It's not mass paranoia. Fans of every team in the country think Liverpool and Chelsea get very soft penalties. Fans of every team in the country think that woolwich get away with obstruction fouls on set pieces.

None of those are paranoia or coincidence. It's the reality of what is happening.

When I watch us, every week I see refs let our opponent get away with the same types of hacks in duels, especially in the wide areas in a mid block. I'm not paranoid, it's become some kind of officiating culture with our team atm.

Referees have to try to see every event and judge whether it is a legal application of any of the (often frequently changing) laws of the game - at a frantic pace in a game conducted by talented actors who cheat on a constant basis to gain advantage or con the referee.
Look at the mufc v Everton game with the last minute penalty shout, Young's dive was hysterically funny and a blatant dive, and yet a cause of pundit anguish as he had been touched and had an almost irrelevant tug on his shirt. That took multiple views and tedious debate and yet is an example of what refs have to try and analyse in an instant hundreds of times every game.

They do have a very tough job and players cheating all the time doesn't help.

Hardly surprising that some get ignored or missed.

Will always happen and I think most fans understand that.

Referees would look a lot more competent if VAR could tell the 4th official to take off players seen cheating for a 10 minutes sin binning and yellow card - using the subs board method, as players would have to stop diving, time wasting, pulling shirts, fuckery in the box at every corner etc
I would also do it without stopping the game, and if the player delayed coming off, then change it to a red. Second offence, red card.

100%. If the VAR can fuck this "clear and obvious error" bullshit off and just be an extra ref who has the advantage of video to get the right whistle, they could actually punish and remove a lot of the cheating and controversial calls.

I'm just not 100% convinced they really want to cut out controversial calls. I think it's part of the product for the Premier League brand.

Trossard, Jota and Cucuracha have to start each game on a ten minute binning for being odious little shit bags.

100%

Finally got to see MoTD and the first 15 mins tht I'd missed cos the rugby was on and I'd not noticed the time. Very glad I did too (miss the first 15 mins)
well, we';ve not learnt much since that terrible start v Aston VIlla because it was a carbon copy. Ball played out left, no defender within miles, free shot in the box, just this time it was saved and an almighty scramble on the line. Then another free shot but just past the post. Then a free header from a FK and hits the post with vic nowhere.
great result in the end, Sonny some great wing play, BJ scores again, but what is it with this can't be arsed to keep these away games tight for the first 20 mins.
esp as Ipswich at WHL started exactly the same way - 3 good chances and a hit post in the first 15 mins. Awful starts all season.

Yeah I thought the same. It is why I wouldnt want to get too carried away. We will still have to outscore teams because we are set up so badly in countering most attacks.

I think it is worse than that.

The Everton penalty the ref awarded would have changed a lot of betting outcomes had the ref's decision remained in place and Everton converted the penalty.

It was also more of a clear and obvious penalty rather than there being something clear and obvious for the ref's original decision to be overturned.

That is my main reason for suspecting the credibility of the Premier League in respect of VAR being used to the detriment and frustration of supporters rather than VAR being used to overturn incorrect decisions or things the referee and linesman have missed completely.

When it was being used appropriately VAR was a problem for the bookmakers and punters; not football clubs or the supporters.

This seems quite obvious to me and just as boxing and horse racing have suffered in a similar way; eventually it will become so obvious nobody will have faith in the officials.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Some closing thoughts from a tractor boy on Saturday and the season:

1. We had a ridiculous sending off for Axel Tuanzebe at Villa Park, he’s a top 6 club right back who will leave, and having him out and then Godfrey against Son lost us the game. When he was replaced we were a different team.

2. Another key factor was Archie Gray - bullied by Delap for 10mins, but he grew into the game and the role so well, which was huge. Impressed and I know it’s not his position. Delap is the real deal, but he has to take one of those three early chances.

3. The offside header second half, we finally got the ball moving and scored in front of the North Stand from one of our own - The Wolf - but rightly offside. And I think 2-2, ground is rocking, subs to come in, could have been a different result.

4. Spence and Johnson (son of a Town legend) made a huge difference in the game. I know Spence has had struggles but probably man of the match.

5. I can see you are calling for a penalty for the OShea barge, I get it, he took the man not the ball, but it was going out. The same ref did not give Town in a similar situation against Leicester at home, and our player was about to shoot - Portman Road would have gone ballistic, if you’d been given it. And the ref knew that.

6. I thought McKenna would replace Ange at the end of the season, he’s a great young manager and thinker, but perhaps his stock has now dropped too far. And Ange has done enough. Or the Bournemouth manager feels like the return to a Poch that you’d all like.

7. So I doubt we’ll see you next season, thanks for that glorious away win at a beautiful stadium (albeit too much hospitality and tourists) - it was special! Good luck with Levy and Ange, you’ve got some quality players just need a silverware mentality. Think Bergvall, Gray, Spence, Johnson, Van Der Ven - good players for the future. Enjoy!

Always had a bit of time for Ipswich. Proper club. And the fact you beat the scum in the 78 fa cup final will always endear ITFC to me.
I'm old enough to remember your mid/late 70s team. For a short period possibly the best in England. Mills, Wark, Mariner, Brazil etc.
Think you go down this season. And I hope you bounce back immediately.

Go on pretty much any fans board (like TFC) and read their match threads - you will find someone, maybe more, saying the self same thing. - I haven't been on them all - but it's a common cry on the ones I have been on.
"The refs have got it in for us!"

Ref the O’Shea barge. I think if you watch it again Danso had a decent chance of reaching that. Whether it was going out is irrelevant. I just think it is ridiculous that a ref lets that go(whatever team it is) when he just flattens him when the ball is at least 5 yards away. Tim Robinson is not the best ref and there were some strange decisions affecting both teams. I see some refs taking quite big games when 12 months ago they looked the worst refs. They haven’t improved. Together with Oliver and Taylor seeming to go backwards it’s not great.

Beattie was good too and shame he got injured 🤕

With references to the thread title :

So far we’ve had three ( 3 !) Saturday 3pm kick-offs so far this season.

P 3 W3 Gf 11 Ga 2 Pts 9

Processing and extrapolating all this data : if we played ALL our games at the traditional time ;

We’d end up on a “ perfect score “ of 114 points ( the first EPL team to do so )

AND will have smashed the PL scoring record ( 139..3333 r ) in doing so

AND set a GD record of 114 ; that I suspect will never be bettered in any of the “ Top 5 Leagues “ . IMO.

Television coverage of football has a lot to answer for if you ask me .

Yeah, it was a quote about something I said, and I was confused about it - if it was your reply - as it didn't really address the point, but instead made 3 fairly sweeping statements about what every fan thinks of 3 different scenarios.
So I reiterated the point you ignored in case I wasn't making it clearly.

I’m not disagreeing that every fan base thinks they get a rough ride from officials. Even fucking Liverpool and Woolwich fans somehow think they have an agenda against them…

I’m just saying there are also things that all fans agree on and that’s these 3 imo

Joelinton and Newcastle in general getting away with murder.

Yates at Forest is very similar to Joelinton

LiVARpool and Chelsea getting soft penalties in large numbers.

Woolwich and fouls at set pieces.
