Lol, Wenger managed Monaco for years before going to Japan. (Because he loved the culture there).
Scottish league back then was miles ahead of Asia. It was in the freaking 70's.. come on man. Your google knowledge has its limit and it shows.

Wenger didn't win the Japanese league tho. Even though its a really low level and such a piece of piss anyone could win it.
 
I've been going over in my mind about Ange Postecoglou , and his insistence of playing his philosophy and set up . It's coming to the point where I think if he doesn't win the Europa League trophy , he'll exit the club in the summer . It's ok playing his system if you have a luxury of players - but we don't have that . We have Kids filling in as first team players because the system is crippling the senior players . Most clubs have around 15-16 first team senior players with a sprinkling of youngsters coming through . We are starting young players because a lot of the senior players are injured . Kulusevski is now injured , but even he seemed to be running in treacle - such was the overuse his body has been put through in the last 3 months . Reguilon who has been unwanted for the last 18 months has had to be called on because we are burning through players . I can't remember in the entire 50 odd years of supporting our club of having this many injuries at the same time . I hope for his own sake that Ange gets to the final and we win Europa League trophy .

He took over a total project club in Japan with zero titles where the job was to do something unheard of vs taking over one of the biggest clubs who have 7 league titles.

The fact wenger achieved what he did there when it was basically a pet project/experiment type deal tells you everything about how much lower the level is.

Wenger also managed Nancy for 3 seasons - and Nancy got relegated in his 3rd season with them.
But Monaco still hired him...

I'm sure you are expert in the history of J League teams when Wenger and Ange took over. I'm pretty sure I remember reading that Ange guided Yokohama to their first J league title in 15 years and they were relegation scrappers when he took over.

Unless I'm mistaken Nagoya Grampus were owned by Toyota and splashing the cash to win things. They had Gary Lineker of all people there the season before Wenger and had Dragan Stojkovic under Wenger. His legacy was mixed there by the time he left and Stojkovic actually surpassed his achievements as manager later.

Not the league but he won 2 cups in his 2 years and runner up in league is not bad plus he was in his early 40's compared to Ange. You also have to note that coaching in the 90's in Asia with no internet / culture it wouldn't been difficult for a European to settle there back then compared today..

Ultimately Wenger was a punt by Dein that worked out big , big time .

Like Mon Mome and Foinavon winning the National at 100-1 ( 67 and 09 ; both in my lifetime) . It can happen , though not very often.

Dein got ( very , very ) lucky and thereby did the goons (fuc4 ’em ) .

Our esteemed leadership tried to emulate them in hiring an unknown , largely untried , Continental coaching prodigy and in their wisdom brought us ……Christian Gross . A 100 - 1 shot that refused at the first fence and then fell over .
