Player Cristian Romero

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

I'm glad we won last night obviously, and there were some very good performances, but am I the only one who thought that Romero looked and played like he didn't give a shit?

I've long since maintained that despite so many poor performances recently, Ange still appears to have the dressing-room, generally - but perhaps Romero is the sole exception. His passing was lazy and often misplaced, he was only tenacious when he could be bothered to be, he just looked like he doesn't care any more and his head is somewhere else now.

Believe me, I'm normally the last person to say this about any of our players, and I really hope that I'm alone in this and misread the situation (perhaps just rusty after not playing for a while). Any thoughts either way?
Nope - I thought he was fantastic and his passing was one of the reasons we looked like a decent team again. Him and VdV really make the high press work. A timely reminder that before they both got injured we were the highest scorers and second best defence in the league and in 5th place.

I think he’s undoubtedly got world class ability, but I genuinely think his arrogance is the biggest problem for us.

I believe he truly thinks he is far, far too good to be playing for a bottom half PL team/ Europa League team, and this is manifesting in his sloppy, erratic performances.

I am extremely confident that if this guy was playing for Real Madrid for instance, where he wasn’t the big cheese in the team and he had more senior experienced players directing him around instead of vice versa, he would be one of the best CB’s in Europe.

Even in situations where his level of commitment is not in question, such as when he plays for his national team, he's a bit of a free spirit on the pitch. This is not something you can't work around, but Ange's style of play which allows CBs tremendous latitude both in and out of possession probably brings the worst in him.

He gives the ball away more often than your average CB because he's playing for manager who expects his CBs to thread the needle with their passes on a regular basis. He goes for risky tackles because, just like his partner, he's often asked to defend the half width of the pitch all by himself since fullbacks are often God knows where. You get the point.

Ange himself is probably not that bothered about these stuff, but those of us who have a more traditional view of how a defender should play can't help but consider Romero too erratic. It's not easy to disentangle who Romero is as a player from what he is assigned to do though, that's my point.

I think both is true he is rusty and he doesnt give a shit anymore.
If any of his 2 or 3 brainfarts had resulted in a goal or two this thread would explode.

Im really sick of him I hope he is gone in the summer

Yup, kicking off with Parrot and snarling around the place. Couple loose passes but the rust shaking off. He's still a class player and a massive presence when he's on it.

Not many CBs itw pass through lines like that. Tbh not many MFs do it either.

This is really what he's good at. Presumably his slow build up is looking for the gaps to thread those passes.

Still feel his head not right with us though. His comments about the board has no return anymore, unless barring a huge change in coaching and management.

I don't get the Romero bashing, he was brilliant on Thursday.
He was. And he is one of our best players and about to enter his peak years. His passing is incredible, he’s the best anttacking the ball from set pieces at both ends, and he makes us a much, much better team. Yes he started the season terribly, and was awful in his first game back, but I am confident he will get back to his best quickly. If him and VdV remain fit we can win the EL.

Uncomfortable truth is that we were never conceding to Fulham when he was on the pitch.

I get that Ange was thinking to protect him from coming straight back to 2x 90mins in 3 days after injury but that’s exactly what Argentina will probably do now…

He’s massive for us whether people like it or not.
Exactly this. The defence fell to pieces when he went off. He was back to his best, winning possession high up, stopping attacks, threading passes through. We were so comfortable in defence when he was on the pitch. We started conceding chances when he went off and no VDV on. Both those goals don't happen if he and VDV are on.
