Just a heads up to those still trying to sort travel, you can get Edinburgh - Geneva - Bordeaux on the 20th and back on the 22nd. Bordeaux around 3-4 hours away by car. Price presently £250-£400 including the hire car. Add in your cost to get to Edinburgh and it’s still not that bad. A hassle, but cheaper than a lot of the direct flights from down south that I’ve seen.

reminds me of some hols we had in Northern Spain, the Sept just before Covid. Fabulous time; hiking in the Picos mountains, then further West, finally coming back for some beach time near San Sebastian. We spent a morning in San Seb, wonderful place. I asked directions from an elderly lady, and as she turned to go I thanked her. In Basque. She froze, then turned back and grabbed my hand. I'll never forget the look on her face.

If I was lucky enough to have got a ticket I'd defo be doing some Duolingo Basque. As Reddit Spurs says I'm sure it would get you a long way with the locals. Phonetic is best, that language is as impenetrable as Finnish for Scandinavians.
That's a lovely story.

In another life before I moved over here my mate and I had flings with a couple of Basque girls in London.

We went over to see them but beforehand we learnt how to say "The Basques are the best" in Basque. It won us friends (and beers) everywhere, especially with the girls' families who were beyond delighted.

Neither he nor I have ever forgotten it, here's a phonetic version...

Eh-oo-skal-da-nak onna-nak dira

That last word almost rhymes with the names Vera or Keira but with a short /i/ sound, as in "it" or "big".
