One weird thought that's come to me now we've won a trophy again, thinking back to 15/16 the 'no trophies' chat from rivals and the media was almost as intense as it was right up until we won one again. But it had only been 8 or 9 years up to that point. Seems like nothing now! Woolwich could be there in a few years.
I couldnt really give a fuck about the money any more as we know we dont reinvest it efficiently but I thought this an interesting comparison.

For you guys that watched us in 83/84, how hard was winning the old UEFA cup? And did you need to finish top 3 in the league previously to enter? I never knew we beat Bayern along the way until today! I guess before the bosman rule teams you think are average today (like Anderlecht) would’ve been way better back then as the best players from their country would all play in those teams.
plus they probably had a 3 foreigner limit
Imagine Hazard, De Bruyne, Dembele, Lukaku, Coutois all playing for Anderlecht.
Ajax got stuffed the most, whole team got ripped apart after they won the CL in 95. What a team that was. Mostly academy as well, think they went unbeaten in their league and in the CL.
That Bayern Munich game was immense. The last couple of minutes were so tense, because of the away goal rule, no-one left early that night!
Both the CL and EL have been diluted, because back then only Champions of their respective leagues were allowed in the European Cup and there wasn't any qualifying rounds, just a simple knockout tournament. That gave the minnows a chance of playing against the big hitters.
Personally I prefer the old formats - European Cup, UEFA Cup and Cup Winners' Cup. But no money in that!
I agree about the old formats, and the CWC should just be a straight knockout as it for people who qualified by winning a straight knockout competition, but i dont suppose there's enough money in bringing it back like that.
My main memory of the 83-84 uefa cup is listening to matches on the radio. I don't think there was much TV coverage then, maybe highlights on sportsnight

At the time, I had no idea if it was in or not. I was waiting for the reactions of the fans/players before I celebrated or cried.

We finished 4th in the previous season despite a huge injury crisis. Gary Mabbutt was a major beneficiary of this as it got him his big break in the first team. He claims to have represented the club in every outfield position. He established himself in midfield and then a few years later established himself as a CB.
Anderlecht did have a very good team. Particularly Enzo Scifo and their sweeper Morten Olsen. We were actually very disadvantaged when we played them because our creative players were injured - we were reduced to playing one of CBs in right midfield (Brian Clough even commented in the TV commentary that he "crossed like a centre-half!"). It was the grit of Graham Roberts that got us through.
We also got to play against some big names in our run to the final - most notably Johan Cruyff when we played Feyenoord and Karl-Heinz Rumminegge when we played Bayern Munich.
The 2nd leg of the 1984 UEFA Cup Final is readily available and I would recommend giving it a watch. It's the most intense match you will ever experience:

I should make it clear that I was only 3 years old in 1984 and therefore wasn't there back in the day. I just enjoy watching old matches and learning about the club's history.
