Am I the only one who is underwhelmed at the prospect of Frank? We can’t do much worse than ange but I think we need someone who is used to handling the resources and prestige of an elite club
We’re not an elite club though, that’s the rub. We have an owner who wants the manager to overperform the resources he’s given. 7th or 8th biggest wage bill? Well, you’re expect to get 4th or 5th.

I guess the counterpoint to this is that Russell Martin’s Southampton had a distinct identity and looked really good dominating teams in the Championship as well.
What surprised me about Boro was the quality of the football being played against another side in the play off spot; away from home.

They dominated Coventry, in their own back yard, in front of a sell out crowd.

The only Boro player I had heard of was the young kid who had been linked to Spurs. His name escapes me even now.

I watched Coventry then play Sunderland, in both play off semis and the play off final against Sheffield United.

In my opinion Boro were a better side than either Coventry, Sunderland or Sheffield United.

Having said that; the league table doesn't lie after 46 games.

I suspect that Carrick is very close to being an accomplished coach from what I saw of his Boro team.

It's all guess work really.

I have no faith or belief in Thomas Frank though.

I'd rather lick the bottom of Clarkson's boots than endure another season or two under one of Levy's bargain bin appointments.

This was their 2-0 loss on the final day?
I believe it was; yeah.

I'd seen them on two other occasions during the season though.

Boro were miles better than Coventry despite losing 2-0.

Coventry were hanging on at 1-0 for most of the second half and if Boro had won 1-4 it would have been a fairer reflection of what I saw.

Boro created quality chance after chance. Gordon Banks was in goal for Cov and the woodwork was battered on at least 3 occassions.

It was a bigger injustice than Nelson Mandela.

I think Boro have been foolish letting Carrick go tbh.

I think they have too.

But come on man, talking about playing entertaining, free-flowing football in a losing effort against Championship-level competition?

If that is success, then Ange is success. That's exactly the way everybody talked about the way he set up Celtic away at Real Madrid.

You're either a tactics hipster or you're not.
Football has changed in the last ten years.

Managers and players previously emerged during purple patches and then often enjoyed sustained periods of success.

I really don't know what new players or managers you can identify these days and hang your hat on for the long term.

Players and some managers seem to have decent seasons in isolation; move on to bigger clubs, for big transfer fees and wages, and then fade into mediocrity or disappear up their own arseholes.

It's a frequent trend.

Gray, Bergval, Sarr, Tel, Odobert, Moore?

Our average age last season was 24.8, Brentford’s was 25.2.
You need to look at the past 5-7 years not just last year LOL.

Since Frank took over Brentford their avg. age has been 25 since 2018.

That means he has been developing players and selling them consistently while keeping the squad young AND being pretty competitive in the EPL which is not easy to do.

Remember his spending power for Brentford is less than half of what we spend. He is a man who can make the most with less around him.

And do what with it though? All he’s ever done is finish mid table or lower, and the football is nothing innovative either.

I just don’t see what there is to suggest Frank is going to suddenly turn into a “next level” type of coach that’s going to turn our weak squad into a top 6 team. So far he got Brentford 12th and 3rd twice in the Champ and 9,16,10 in the PL.

Brentford haven’t got as big a budget, but they have been praised for the smartness of their recruitment. There isn’t much difference in overall quality to our misfits. Just don’t see what anyone is seeing that makes them think Frank will have us up the top end.

Unfortunately, I doubt we’d talk Hoeness away from his new contract and getting DeZerbi out of Marseille this summer might be tricky too, having got them back into CL having been backed by the club with some signings like Rabiot.

Never really know about Marseille and De Zerbi. Think there were some issues as late as April. Dunno. He probably fancies himself at a bigger address than Marseille even though they are historically big. I could see him taking the Inter job
