Player Dominic Solanke

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

Only Salah, Isak and Haaland scored more than 20 PL goals last season

Solanke 16 goals and 8 assists (24 goal involvements ) in all competitions last season. Not that many with better stats available with PL experience .

Seems to me that we had very skillful forwards with Berbatov and Keane around 2006-08

And we had Kane and Son from around 2015.

I'm not sure Solanke and co will be remembered as being as good as those players here at their prime but the stats you posted about Solanke in all competitions are quite good.

We don't seem to have a forward now that Son's performances have declined that can be a game changer or one that can do anything particularly skillful to breach a defence, nobody we can sort of rely on to win a game when the team is needing it.

I don't think anyone is questioning Solanke's work rate, just that he not prolific enough to regard him as a top class striker.
1 goal in 4 in The EPL?
1 goal in 3 all other comps?
I think we need to be judging our players using the PL, because in all competitions we're including playing teams like Tamworth, Coventry, Bodo, AZ what-they called? Who simply don't have the quality players of the kind that are in most PL teams that we would usually play against.

Dom is a 90K a week decent but unspectacular No. 9. Nothing more/nothing less.

There’s a reason he/his agent didn’t demand higher wages even after a 19 goal season - and no other Big 6 team went in for him. He’s also 27 so he is likely “fully-formed” at this point.

But let’s see if Frank can work some magic.

You can probably say the same thing about a lot of teams, strikers aren't as sought after like they were a few years back, and it seems like since wide forwards now have a more prominent role in the game I don't think having that top top strikers matters all that much anymore tbh.

Obviously there are general anomalies like Kane and Haaland but City won a league by having a false 9, Liverpool have won their last 2 leagues without a dominant striker, Woolwich got within a whisker with Havert up fromt who by the way is much maligned by his own fans and not many of us would have or still wouldn't pick him over Solanke.

I think with Solanke we just need to accept that he's not gonna be Kane, he never will be but gibe him the right service and he will score, he needs better players either side of him though and a better system that supports him that's for sure.

That all seems correct to me but even in the wide forward areas that Robbie Keane would at times occupy in the past, we don't seem to have that much skill. and we're hoping for either Odobert or Tel, do develop over time but it isn't much good right now.

It's probably a reason why Solanke lacks service

I like Solanke , I think he’s still got a higher ceiling in him despite his age . He’s got a good touch , a decent turn of pace in the first few yards , for me he lacks that killer instinct and willingness to get onto the end of crosses and into the box . There aren’t many ‘number 9s’ out there and I’m happy we got him , hopefully Frank can improve him but I see no reason he can’t get 20 goals if he’s fit , we now have to upgrade Richi as his back up .

He literally doubled his wage when he signed for us, that's a 200% increase on his salary at Bournemouth

You might have missed the absolute tactical clown show he was putting those numbers up in.

Yeah except our attackers in general had decent numbers. And I absolutely don’t discount being managed by Ange as a factor but it still doesn’t mean it was a good season.

7 non penalty goals as a striker isn’t good. Ange or not. It’s fine, much like bus-conductor bus-conductor I think he’s ok but I’m not blown away.

I think you could judge it if he was wasteful, but his xG (as much as I hate the stat) is only 12.35 for the season. He's underperformed that a little, but he's not really had the service.

We generally didn't play in a way that was good for a CF

Actually, I think Dom's role under Ange was less about finding space and scoring goals - and more about occupying the space and making the room for other players by harassing the CBs are drawing them to false runs.

Johnson played as a ghost. Hiding from the ball and the defenders, allowed him to make those excellent runs into space to score.

You need to look at his role in the team and the goals others scored. Solanke was a real work horse last season, the focal point of our attack, and led an aggressive press. We had 5 players who got into double figures for goals - Johnson (18), Solanke (16), Maddison (12), Son (11), Kulusevski (10). All 5 of them had significant injuries and missed games as well.

However, under Ange I think he often worked too hard. Sometimes (pointlessly) pressing aggressively when his team mates were not.The last 10 minutes of games he looked like a dead man walking, and he often was not in the box as he'd been hounding the opposition before he won the ball back. We also did not utilise his aerial ability at all under Ange. I do not remember hardly any crosses for a header - it was all intricate, ground crosses that were relatively easy to block if not perfect. I would expect Frank to tell him that he needs to stay between the goal posts and only press when it is coordinated and not a waste of effort. I also think under Frank he will get more goals from set pieces.

Let's judge him at the end of this season under a manager renowned for getting the best out of his forwards.
