Transfers The Summer Transfer Edging Thread 2025

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

When they were talking about things happening, I think we all knew what they meant. You being pedantic about transfers that had already been done wasn't engaging in good faith was it mate?

May as well have included all the work the groundman did to get the pitches ready for pre-season if you wanted to point out how busy the club has been.

No they said "We've done sweet fuck all with transfers and this thread is closing on a 1000 pages. How?"

That's all past tense - it wasn't about "thing happening" in a present or future tense.

There's been plenty of movement to talk about - it is just for some people it isn't big and shiney enough to meet their definition, so on all 996 pages so far there has been complains about nothing happening, whilst transfers have been happening.

It is more pedantic to say "Nothing" has happened. Vuskovic and Danson are technicalities yes, but Tel and Takai are not.

but Poch wasn't interested in him as a main signing

This board is more fun when the Levybots can deliver some modicum of creativity rather than just bashing the same 2-3 buttons on the controller at random

That's the "Tielemans" button, mate :dohertyshrug:

there was also a hard limit on what someone should have been risking on him.
To do my best to be substantive, 45M or whatever would have been over the odds in Summer 2018, definitely. But that bet would have been right! That's less than half of his market value in the middle of the contract he would have signed!

That isn't what happened, according what I'm sure Jack said since. We agreed terms with Jack, Villa told him to pack and say goodbye, we offered the £25m they wanted, and then they stalled it whilst the takeover went through before rejecting it on TDD, putting a freeze on all sales
Don’t think Grealish has spoken on it? Think Bruce is the only one and he said that we could have signed him early in the window for the 20-25m? but we stalled, then apparently offered 7m and onomah. That got rejected and by the time we came back in they were in talks for a takeover.

None of us here really know 100% but I doubt we offered what they wanted or close to it straight off the bat thinking they were a distressed seller.

So Poch was relentlessly going on about wanting players who could improve the first team, and you think he was seeing an undeveloped championship midfielder as that guy? Exact same reason why I'm sure he rejected Tielemens in the following window, seeing as how you mentioned him.
At no point did Poch ever actually say he wanted Grealish, despite all the links, and it fits in with the narrative mentioned by David Webb and David Pleat about that window. We could have easily bought Grealish the following summer instead of Ndombele or Lo Celso - for less money too - and he still didn't.

I'm surprised all of this needs to be rehashed regularly, to be honest.

grealish isnt good anyway so we dodged a bullet not signing him.

We're getting into the weeds here, but we bought Lo Celso for less than it would have cost to get Grealish post-Villa takeover the prior year, and the next summer they'd been promoted on the back of him playing even better, in an escalating market.

What the club did do that next season is develop the conviction that Ndombele was a player we had to have. We seem to still be dealing with the psychological fallout from that.

This would have been a classic levy trick.
See a club in financial struggles, then offer a silly amount hoping the club caves.
If you want a player get them in ASAP, you leave yourself open for a deal to blow up in your face.

He was excellent at Villa before he went to City and gradually declined.

I think Kane would have suffered the same. He never looked anywhere near as good for England as he did at club level (under Southgate) because of the very "static" role. Certain players, whether it be a Grealish, Kane, Bale, Ronaldo, Messi - no ability equivalence implied - are at their best when they are allowed to roam about a bit, and suffer from being plonked on a wing or in the 6 yard box if the ball never comes to them
