Transfers The Summer Transfer Edging Thread 2025

It's pretty funny how everyone decided that we're getting Wharton, based on twitter ITKs, who knew nothing of MGW and Kudus.

think there's better value elsewhere, nice enough player but his ability to stay fit is worse than James maddison , just looking over it and he's never managed to play over 30 league games. crazy

Starting to think we may see some unexpected exits

For example, midfield, as much as there is a lot of talent there now - theres not really any balance

Maddison, Gibbs-White, Bentancur, Sarr, Bergvall, Gray, Bissouma

So many people want a 6, so add a Wharton (as recent rumour, "passing 6") or Luiz/Palhina (as previous rumour, "defensive 6")

And its even more congested

Although one thing that does occur - our bench is going to be strong next season!

(EDIT, and I didnt even consider Kulusevski being used in midfield as well!)

I think everyone will be fluid and we want to push in as many competitions as possible

Fuck knows what is going to happen to Maddison (28) and Kulusevski (25).

Gibbs-White obviously starts at CAM so that's Madders benched and you'd imagine it'll be Johnson or Kudus at RW which sees Kulu sat next to him.

I imagine a bit of shit is going to get thrown about in the next couple of weeks and noses put out of joint.

When Kulu is back from injury I think who ever doesn’t perform out of Maddison and Kulu will be gone next summer.

Tel is not a game changer. Rather have git the Georgian lad or used the money towards eze. Although not sure what happened there as the door opened up for by palace changing the payment terms. Now we have activated release clause for MGW. Strange personally out of the two EzE is the better player and has done it for longer period. MGW is good also but we needed a no6 more than him.
What georgian lad

This obsession with starting 11 is lunacy. I think you are likely to have all players available for selection for less than 5% of games….. last season was extreme but having 3 or 4 key players injured or suspended is not unusual
Teams need 15 starting 11 players. Minimum. Games changed. players getting hooked at 60 minutes doesn't mean they've played badly, just good to give them half our to cool down properly and be ready for the next game.

£20-£25m
He's 29 soon and 1 year on his contract. He's not Harry Kane. If he holds out until January he's into the low teens IMO.

I was thinking yesterday that we're in a position where I'm not sure we get weaker by letting anyone go tbh. I doubt Romero goes now, but if he did, it would be enough money to replace him and balance the books IMO. Literally anyone can go IMO and I doubt many fans would be upset. We don't have a Berbatov, Modric, Bale or Kane to "lose"

In his first summer he had Johnson (£50m), Maddison (£40m?) Van der Ven (~£37m or so?), Vicaro (£17m?), Veliz (£12m), Phillips (£2m?).
Plus that summer was also Kulu and Porro obligations (£60-70m)

So far, Frank is comfortably about £100m short of what Ange had in his first window, taking into account the Tel and Danso transfers that balance out the Kulu/Porro ones that people will say don't count, too
From the non professional view of a fan none of the above mentioned has provided me the same level of satisfaction as the news of MGW. From a personal perspective can't think of another player we should have been working on to bring in and certainly supports the narrative....it's not how much you spend but who you spend it on.

Depends what system(s) Frank has in mind and how deep our block will be. I suspect at home against bus parker’s he’ll play Maddison ans an 10 and Gibbs-White as a 8 with one CM (Bentancur) behind them . And away we’ll play a lower block with a double pivot (in which Bentancur and Bergvall could excel). Either way, we’ll have high quality back up in every position. Imagine taking off Tel, Gibbs-White, Kudus and Udogie after 60 mins and bringing on Son, Maddison, Kulusevski and Spence? With 5 subs we should see proper in-game management and rotation under Frank. The muscle strain injuries that dogged us under Ange will quickly become a distant memory.

Fluid is one thing, natural tendencies to defending is another

I mean Bentancur is our defacto DM, and he isnt even a DM...

Thats more my point really, the mix of attributes isnt right IMO

That said, loving the depth and it should mean we can take all competitions seriously

As above, I think its more about mix of skill sets.

Maybe Franks expected coaching upgrade over last season can accommodate, but if we play a midfield 3 of (say) Bentancur, Maddison, Gibbs-White - they will have to be incredibly disciplined, press on point, and play against their natural instincts to a degree to make sure we are defensively sound

Wharton would be the best signing we’ve made since Alderweireld or Son. Makes perfect sense and has world class potential.

Issue is he could go anywhere in the world he’s that good. Palace will be demanding £70-80m+ and as soon as clubs get a sniff of that then Liverpool, City, Bayern will be straight in.
VdV has been the best signing since Son and Alderweireld. Bergvall, Udogie etc. up there as well IMO.
