Player João Palhinha

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

He was one of the best in his position at Fulham. Bayern hasn't worked out for him but that's football. You always need a bit of luck to hit the ground running at a new club and unfortunately for him he quickly got injured.

It's an excellent signing on loan with no obligations.

Bayern are the best team in their league by quiet a distance and usually have 70% possession in most league games under Kompany. Palinha's best traits are ou of possession, hunting, tackling and covering ground. He's almost like a Declan Rice type.

That Bayern move was never going to suit him under kompany. I think he'll be a real asset for us in big games. I can see us rotating him out in home prem games against bottom half teams.

Only three players have been booked 13 times for two seasons running!
Funnily enough, I actually like to see this in a combative midfielder, as it usually means he's regularly getting stuck in. Mind you, I always liked to stick a "reducer" on the opposition in my playing days, with a little whisper in the ear that that was just the appetiser with the main course and dessert coming up!

When you have players worrying more about you than what they're going to do with the ball, you've won that midfield battle.

I was normally at the other end of those "reducers", I normally found getting up laughing at them got them so wound up the next tackle got them a booking or sent for early bath + a nice £25 or a £40 fine (that was 70's & early 80's)

It was late 70's through to early 90's for me, before I blew out my knee. Funnily enough (I wasn't laughing at the time) it was a reducer put on me just 10 seconds into the game. Snapped my ACL and PCL and effectively ended my playing days.

I was very much like yourself, in that I never ever got wound up by other players, but if the reducer didn't work, I always knew how to push another player's buttons.

I once had a player call me a donkey in a game, so I nutmegged him twice, scored 2 goals and set up a third in the first half, then spent the rest of the match yelling eey awe every time he opened his mouth. Even his own team were laughing when I did it. Drove him right up the wall.

Ah, thems were the days!

I can see Palhinha being useful in different scenarios:

For the toughest away games.... he can form a double pivot with Bentancur or Sarr and sit in front of 3 x CBs. This team would be very tough to break own and could defend set pieces all day.

GK
Danso -- Romero -- VdV
Spence -- Palhinha -- Bentancur -- Udogie
Kudus -- Bergvall
Solanke
Against park the bus teams at home..... he can be a single defensive shield and allow us to play more aggressively with a high line, FBs bombing on, and let Kudus and Maddison create in front of him:

GK
Porro -- Romero -- VdV -- Udogie
Palhinha
Kudus -- Maddison
Kulusevski -- Solanke --- Odobert

Beware the wrath of Blakey...

Excellent signing in my opinion. Brings top-level PL and international experience in a position we are short in. Hes at a good age to help those around him as well. Also, hes a bastard and likes a tackle. We need one of them - not in every game, but in games where we need to be strong he will be very useful. We've got a lot of games this season coming so more bodies with actual proven quality is a great way to go rather than more kids/punts.
