Player João Palhinha

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

He's a DM, a very good one who Bayern were very happy to pay 50m for 12 months ago.

His job is to minimise goals conceded - and we were leaking a lot of goals last season, so no surprise we wanted to target a DM this season.

But a DM can also be viewed positively as he'll form a screen in front of our CB's and that in turn allows our full backs more opportunity to move forward knowing the 3 players (2 CB's and 1 DM) are a resolute defence behind them, and also allows the other 2 CM's to help create chances knowing they don't need to be defensive when in possession.

Its not rocket science. But its amazing that some fans don't understand it - and the shit stirrers are determined to undermine the players in whatever way they can.

Looks like a decent signing on a 'try before you buy' basis - so a clever pragmatic signing. And the loan may well free up more cash for other signings this summer - good news for fans, bad news for the non fan shit stirrers .

Now that TF has said Sonny is leaving, I doubt this loan/transfer will be announced before Monday.
If all of the reports are true, of course.

I think its possible that Palhinha gets announced today, maybe early evening after everyone has absorbed the news that Son is leaving.

Agree its unlikely to be announced tomorrow due to match, which would delay things until Monday. But I'm hoping we start to get news of the next signing on Monday given that on Thursday we have the Bayern match, and there's usually a couple of days of news build up before it becomes clear we are signing someone.

Transfer window closes on Monday 1 September, and I think Spurs are going to want to get say 5 players out (Solomon, Gil, Bissouma, maybe Davies and another one or two ) and get 2 or more players in after Palhinha so time is running out to fit in the transfers in and out as well as matches if they are all on separate days (plus about 6 loans out to be announced) !

.

I'm happy with this. It was only last season he went to Bayern for a pretty decent fee for someone his age and was seen as the best DM in the league outside the big 6.

He also fills a role that pretty much all of us have been crying out for. He might not be amazing on the ball or known for his technical ability, but he can play in that holding role and win the ball. Also adds more physicality in the midfield.
AND experience! Something we also need.

And this is what so many frustratingly don’t understand. A so called DM should be able to receive and pass the ball forward and keep the game flowing, read the game and snuff out danger and offer a bit of protection for the defence but should still be able to go and join in the game. We will have so much possession in certain games where your defensive midfielder will be on the ball 30/40 yards from the opposition goal. We can’t just have a guy who jumps into tackles.
I’m not sure of this one but he adds depth to the squad.
Do you think you get into the Portuguese national team by just "jumping into tackles"?

I'm not over the moon either. But it's a position we have been missing in for years.

He had that in Norgaard at Brentford but he could also get involved further forward. He wasn’t just a sitter and not move from that position type. Mate,I’m all for seeing how this goes because he might be a great signing but I also don’t think he’s better than Bentancur.
AND we need experience and steel in the middle of the park.

But this forum is in a psychotic winger loop! We need at least 100. Especially after being one of the leagus top scoring teams up until we decided to down tools.

Agree that LaLiga is the top league followed by EPL and Bundesliga basically tied.
Well Madrid and Barca make it the top league in CL terms. Take them out how many other Spanish teams would win the CL? Maybe Atletico, that's it.

It’s a bit skewed because most of the world’s best players in the last 20 years haven’t played in the PL as they’ve been playing for Madrid or Barca. La Liga as a whole I’m not sure is as strong as the PL.

Another thing people tend to forget is that it’s not like most weeks we’ll be playing teams who sit back against us. Though obviously a little TBD under Frank. I mean how many teams do we expect to have more possession than us? I’d expect quite a few. Pool, City, Chelsea, Woolwich probably for sure, Newcastle maybe, Villa maybe, Fulham maybe, Brighton, Man U maybe, Bournemouth maybe.

I think it’s pretty even, to be honest, with different styles.

Man City and Liverpool have skewed things in the EPL. When was the last time a club other than those two won the league?

Chelsea won the odd UCL a few years ago. That was against the flow and surprising. Similar to how Atlético Madrid reached a final against Real Madrid and lost in penalties.
