Yes, but that's nothing to do with the release clause expiry, there's no incentive there for a buying club to wait until it expires to aid negotiations. He’s 28 next June, his current contract expires June 2027.
Palace don’t have the power unless they’re financially flush.
Equally Eze has one more move/decent contract in his career. If he wants to play CL he needs to leave and probably by no later than next summer. And at that point his value in the market is considerably less.
Spurs or any other buying club are arguably in the strongest position…
People talk about release clauses as though the selling club can't accept offers lower, even though we've literally seen it ourselves with Kudus this summer, release clause of £85m and we bought him for £55m, the release clause expiring does nothing to strengthen the negotiating position of a buying club, if anything it weakens it.
His value deteriorating due to contract expiry is an entirely separate issue, and that is happening whether there's a release clause or not. It's also a more complex issue because his value to Palace can't be assessed as purely a transfer fee, he has value on the pitch, and like we did with Kane, they may prefer to hold on to the player for what he brings on the pitch as opposed to what he brings to te bank account.
They may also be hoping that he's as daft as Zaha and keeps signing new contracts before wondering why he can't get a transfer away every summer, but the Guehi thing might give them pause for thought on that.
