poor game from him, but he was handicapped tonight, hes not kudus, he needs to actually link with players to produce, tough to get that going when the CM wants to go backwards and take too long on the ball.

Bentancur was hilarious- I remember a sequence in the second half where he evaded two players to dribble the ball backwards 30 yards and reset play to our keeper- great fucking job Roddy.

Spence for his part was incredibly reluctant to take the absolutely wide open space out left. He really need to figure that out if he wants to be anything except a defensive specialist left back. Providing width as a fullback in the modern game is ESSENTIAL.

Xavi is working with almost nothing out left. For his part though I'm a bit disappointed he didn't try to take it out wide or down the line at all- would have helped him in his matchup I think. Our left flank is obviously a work in progress. Xavi will come good, I'm sure his best work will be in the middle for us, but I don't think Frank is confident enough to try it against any kind of real competition just yet.

spence has dropped off since the hype a few weeks ago, its like now hes got in the first 11 hes got too comfortable.

yea it was tough for xavi today, he looks like a decent player, good touch etc. should have been sent off though which is a slight worry, on a yellow and giving the ref the chance to send him off.

He was very lucky to stay on, I agree. He didn't cope well trying to go inside against a big physical fullback. It was a day I hope he learns from.

Spence is odd. Defensively he is fantastic, especially when he gets the ball in our own corner and finds space to retain possession and get out.

But he lacks so much going forward, doesn’t run with the ball, doesn’t cut inside, doesn’t look to take on a man etc

That lack of a left foot is a really killer as he can’t whip in rhe ball and by the time he’s got it back on the right thr defenders have reset.

We have a few easier games so I’d love to see porro get a rest, throw Spence at RB and have Udogie start at LB to see how he links with Xavi

He’s been fine, tidy on the ball, kind of what I expected tbh. Never really been blown away by him. Don’t see him as a real difference maker in the team, not yet anyway.

I know you're not much of a JP fan, but; without someone doing a similar job anchoring and sweeping up ahead of the defense, the MF will get wrecked by the majority of EPL teams.

We don't retain the ball anywhere near well enough for that.

I’m ok with JP, Sarr and Xavi or JP, Bergvall, Xavi
But these midfield selections we are seeing so far are absolute murder.

And tbh I disagree, we’ve played 4 PL games and 2 of those we were definitely not getting wrecked without JP. the Burnley game he didn’t play and it was probably the best balance we’ve had in MF. Bournemouth he did play and it was the most wrecked we could possibly get.

The comments about being lucky not to be sent off are glossing over the fact his actual yellow card in the 1st half was very harsh, he did sufficient fouls over the course of the game to merit a yellow card and thats what he got.
I don't think we used him very well and most of the attacks came down the other wing

The Ref really had no feel for the game. He put himself in a box around what was OK and not OK that must have been confusing for the players.

will be interesting to see him in a 433 in midfield, he looks more of a 4231 CAM to me. hes not anywhere near the physical levels of berg and sarr. but if he is as good a footballer as people are saying then hell be fine of course. hes shown some nice composure on the ball, we do need that in midfield badly.

looks wasted very wide left to me, and by proxy wasting the development of odobert and Tel.
for me Frank's just going to have to start rotating him with sarr or bergvall in the middle, he definitely should start at home in the middle

I think TF is trying to squeeze both Sarr and Bergvall into the same team which then moves Xavi out wide.

IMHO he’s shown flashes that he’ll have far greater influence when moved centrally.

Frank has already indicated how little he fancies Odobert and Tel, at the moment at least, by trying to shoehorn Johnson to the left.

Simons will stay on the left for a while I think, due to lack of alternatives more than anything.
