Player Xavi Simons

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

He's not a left winger, not fair judging him after a few games in a new league mostly out of position

Not aimed at you mate but there's literally no patience anymore
No patience? Absolutely.New players need to hit the ground running, for the fans at least.

I suppose, on the other hand, it's quite often the case that someone who makes an immediate impact goes on to greater things, while someone who underperforms continues to do so. First impressions can be misleading, but are often a good pointer to future potential.

I 100% bought into the Xavi hype, but to be honest, he hasn't quite lived up to my expectations yet. It may be just a matter of time. He might be amazing, but for now I've moved into the 'jury's still out' camp. Maddison, if he was fit, would be my preferred choice over Xavi.

Would you prefer Maddison on the left wing over Xavi?

Because I’m pretty sure that’s where he’d be playing as well if he was fit

What was the hype?

Released by big clubs.
Playing as 10 in the weaker Dutch league. Gets moved to LW in the bundesliga which is clearly a weaker league than the premier league.

No other big clubs really wanted him.

None of that screams out we were getting a player who would instantly transform us playing as a 10. Especially with our rather shit forwards (compared to the elite ones out there)

Listen to Chuck D in the future!!
Not the donuts on here.

Modric, Bale, Kane all took a while to show us their best

Dele, Van der Vaart both made an instant impact.

Tbh I don’t think it’s predictable either way

He’s the starting 10 for the Netherlands, played a mix of 10 central and 10 off the left wing in an unusual tactical set up in the Bundesliga.

The performance he showed us from the bench against Brighton playing 10 centrally should have been enough for Frank to see where he needs to play imo. I can’t remember a substitute coming on and changing the game for us like that in a while tbh. It was probably Kane or Son.

He definitely needs time, same as Wirtz - both struggling with the physicality and the pace of the league, it's majorly different to the Bundesliga where you get more time and space and players are not as physical.

People keep asking why Frank doesn't play in him the 10 and I think this is the exact reason, he loses the ball and his duels when he's on the left but it's more of a risk if he loses his battles in the middle of the pitch.

I'd be disappointed if he didn't get to double assists and close to 10 goals.
Given that he's taking the corners, and has been given a central role, that's not very much to ask for.

But once Kulu return, what role with Xavi play? Can't see Kulu being placed on the left because of Kudus.

Kulu central, forcing Xavi to the left? I think that's not unlikely. And from the left, I don't see him racking up either goals or assists.

I'll take the other side. He's not reaching your targets imo.

I also expect him to miss some games from being sent off. He's a bit careless with his challenges.

Yeah he might play there for the Netherlands but comparing international football to the pace and physicality of the premier league is a pointless exercise. It’s chalk and cheese.

And similar with coming on to play 30 minutes when the opposition has tired somewhat. Definitely a good indicator though.

I’ve no doubt he can eventually be a starter for us in CM, he’s got ability. Looks quality.

Saw it with modric. Just needs time to get used to the league and the intensity.
He won’t have known anything like it week in week out.

Expecting prime messi off the bat is a bit crazy though.

He looked terrible on the Left , although its just 1 game any way Kulu won't be back for a while yet so I guess its up to Xavi to make himself the N01 in his favoured position.

Maddison often puts himself out there, then has the ability to cut inside and make an incisive pass. I haven't seen quite the same composure from Xavi yet - but it's early days.
I think Maddison is better on the left. He has great games centrally, but ghosts a fair few too. I just the left is a better platform for him…. He can go both ways and always gets on the ball, not so easy centrally

It will be nice to have competition for places.
Kulusevski is hit and miss though. He can have 5-10 games where he looks like our best player and then 10 games where he looks like Sunday league clogger.
