German media create nickname for Luka Vuskovic as ‘astonishing’ Tottenham star impresses again

Mon 29 September 2025 8:40, UK
Tottenham Hotspur loanee Luka Vuskovic continues to go from strength to strength in the Bundesliga, and the defender has just set a remarkable record.

Last week, the teenager had a rather eventful match, as Vuskovic scored his first Bundesliga goal, but also managed to break two fingers.

But he is quickly settling into his new surroundings, with Vuskovic having made his debut against Bayern Munich in a 5-1 defeat.

His latest display for HSV Hamburg has now seen him register a truly stunning stat which hasn’t been matched in Europe’s top five leagues in over five seasons.

Luka Vuskovic sets ‘astonishing’ aerial duels record

Luka Vuskovic has just become the first player in over five seasons to win 18 aerial duels in Europe’s top five leagues, according to Sofascore.

The 18-year-old helped his side to keep a clean sheet away at Union Berlin by winning 18 of his 20 duels against the club from the German capital.

Last season, the defender netted seven goals for Westerlo, with the majority of them coming from his ability to dominate in the air.

Even last weekend, the Croatian international opened his Bundesliga account with a headed effort against 1. FC Heidenheim.

Over the summer, Vuskovic had several clubs after him, and it’s no wonder following his mighty impressive start to life in Germany.

Martin Jol backs Vuskovic to become better than Cristian Romero, showing just how highly rated he is by many in football.

Thomas Frank will be watching the defender with great excitement and thinking of the possibilities of having him attack and defend corners next season.

German media create a new nickname for Luka Vuskovic

Following his stunning display for HSV, Hamburger Abendblatt have now nicknamed the teenager ‘Air Vuskovic’ for his dominant ability in the air.

Commenting on his performance, the German outlet wrote: “The Alte Försterei urgently needs to be expanded if the Croatian is to compete there again.

“Vuskovic occasionally jumped all the way to the stadium roof. It’s astonishing how effortlessly he wins every header. He won 19 of his 23 duels.”

The youngster is quickly becoming a fans’ favourite at Hamburg, and Tottenham Hotspur look to have got this loan spot on.

As I said ages ago this isn’t a normal youth player. It’s another Bergvall maybe even more extreme than Bergvall. He was one of the best players in the Belgian league last season according to reports don’t be surprised if he is one of the best players in the German league by end of season.

we paid £12m for a 16 year old who had 584 mins of senior football under his belt, Hajduk demanded their highest ever fee received for him. Clearly he's been well known as a physical anomaly in elite scouting circles since before we signed him, have to get these loans and his coaching right because if he's as utterly fucking imperious as it seems like he's going to be strength wise and in the air give him even half the game intelligence of Ledley King and you might be looking at the first £100m defender should we ever wish to sell him.

With physical demands becoming ever more important in the modern game in every position having such a statistical outlier as a CB who can potentially offer you anything up to 10 goals in all comps at one end from corners and more than 10 saved at the other end by token of the same attributes you have insane value on your hands.

Yeah really good all round player. Very solid defensively but also good technically, could probably play DM too. A long way off though, will need a few loans I imagine.

I keep seeing people talk about him playing in midfield, but to me that would highlight his lack of pace, and he would use his arial dominance less. This guy is a centreback for me all day.

Danso was so bad on the ball last night. Never seen a footballer at that level be so bad. I like him as a defender but he should never be allowed on an Astro turf pitch again.
he looks very slow to me danso too, theres been times when theres distance between him and an attacker and they have a clear path to goal unless he actually gets into the area he needs too, he looks very slow to do that.

hes alright in a back 3, but in a 2, not too sure.

Surely he's the Romero replacement in 2-3 years?

Him and VDV partnership is ridiculous.

I agree with Jol he can exceed Romero. I watched his game over the weekend- guy just reads everything around him so well. Always knows the right place to be, where to point for a teammate to pass to, utterly physically dominant.

We will have a real problem fitting him in as soon as next season. He'll be better than 3rd CB material in a back 4.

Consider Vusk in a 3-4-3 for us:

Xavi - Dom - Kudus
Udog - Sarr - Berg - PP
VdV - Vusk - Rom
Vic
We would be excellent in set pieces. VdV and Romero can take turns going forward to join the attack.

You don’t have wingers in that formation , you have wing backs. He would be a 10 with Kudus. Dom at the top.
Would prob work, not as if Frank has never played it before. Udogie and Porro would be proper wing backs not that abomination that Utd have.
Rubbish….in that formation Xavi is on the wing and Porro and Udogie are wingbacks.I your formation has Dom up front on his own with Xavi and Kudus behind him then yes.

That’s what Perryman said. Dom on his own, Xavi and Kudus behind him.

Or when players recover, RKM up front with Maddison and Kulu behind.

Plays to the strengths of the squad.
