Eric worked really well in the way Poch set it up.
When we had the ball he dropped into the middle of a back 3 to allow Rose and Walker to get forward. When we didn't have the ball he was a screen for the back 4.
It was smart tactics by Poch, and Eric did it very well ... though it helps when you have Dembele, Vertonghen and Alderweirald around you.

I have never rated Dier's ball handling or passing while playing CDM. That's just me though I understand others like yourself think that it was particularly effective. I'd always have rather seen Eric at CB than at CDM- just me. Toby, Jan and Moussa made everyone around them look better.

Did he need much range of pass in that team? He worked well in the system. Just win the ball and give it to Dembele.
Poch set it up so everyone could do what they were good at.

It's the only thing he's good at. His lack of ability in every other aspect cripples us and invites pressure on us. He's so easy to press, he can't pick a forward pass, can't break lines with dribbling or passing. The ball stays on our third when he's on the pitch because we have one midfielder expected to make up for his deficiencies.

As a player in a system that suits him, playing 5 or 6 times a year as necessary, sure. But we need to actually start playing football, and he is a human handbrake.

if you put him around better footballers his football would be ok, hes hardly been around good footballers here. a player like him should have simple options left and right once hes won the ball, they are the players that are then meant to do something. hes been paired with the useless bentancur who excels at absolutely nothing, and stuck with shit FBs. his primary options 9 times out of 10 have been shit. a prime modric wouldnt look great in this side.

hes meant to be a screener who wins the ball and gives a simple pass, its meant to add a nice balance to the side, the problem is we dont have midfielders that are good enough on the ball to pair him with. if maddison was fit things would probably look a lot different as hed come and get the ball off him, everyone would be raving about him then.

The gap between him and Maddison would be too big. Need two 8's next to him. Either way, we don't have anything like the players for him to be effective here, so he shouldn't be playing. Was a poor signing for me. Totally unsuited and seemingly undroppable.

I’m tired of this “If only he had better footballers around him” nonsense.

He’s not even that good at screening - the amount of times he vacated his position going on a stupid one man press, and got beat was ridiculous.

Sander Berge was far better, Fulham have probably upgraded.

You can’t get away with being so limited
