Ex-Spurs Player Brennan Johnson

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

But should - West Ham have moved to that in the last 2 games and won them both.

Every team playing like a Pep wet dream or Sam Artetadyces Woolwich is making the game worse - we’re doing long throw comps for fuck sake

I dont know if two striker systems really work nowadays, teams are setting up playing mid blocks and condensing space, it seems like strikers nowadays are more purely facilitators for other players as opposed to pure goalscorers.

I agree, he couldn’t be the 1 ma up top on his own that modern football is obsessed with currently. He would have been a very successful player in the 90’s though as part of a 2 man partnership.

Football is not better for this 1 player up top 10 goals a season but plenty of running bollocks - it’s why Woolwich top the league but don’t score from open play and don’t score through their attacking players and we’ve decided to copy that model for some ridiculous reason - it’s disgusting
It's absolutely hideous, couple that with how rubbish we are and it's difficult to muster any interest at all in modern football.

I don't watch anything outside of Spurs games anymore, and even that has become less and less of a certainty as I no longer bother to deconflict activities, if something else is happening at the same time I'll probably just do the something else, and that includes the weekly shop.

My 6 year old was showing some interest in watching with me earlier in the season, he had the sense to fuck it off after the Wolves game though, summing us up as "playing like lazy dicks".

Anyway, I digress, Woolwich storming to the title this year (with their insurmountable 4 point lead) comes from fielding 4 centebacks across the backline every week, shielded by 2 defensive midfielders. They've reached the point that they might steady eddie their way to a title in a year that everyone else is having a gap year, because every single player in their squad has been purchased for ~£40m minimum and all they can think to do for the expense is be solid and spam set-pieces.

Absolutely disgusting viewing.

I am sure a top coach can make it work - hopefully we employ one soon

None of the top coaches in football play like this so surely that tells you enough

Regardless football works in cycles anyway, the 2 man system will probably come back soon as well as the flying wingers just to combat this mid block nonsense that every team seems to be doing nowadays :D

Exactly, it’s abysmal to watch. An obsession with “controlling a game” and then ensuring you have an edge on the % elements like set pieces - it’s not black jack at a Vegas casino, it’s football.

It should be a mixture of technical and athletic players and the technical players need to have some athleticism and the athletic players need to have some technical ability.

That Woolwich side aren’t a patch on the team they had in the Wenger years, they are boring as fuck

It’s all cyclical, I just can’t stand this time line - the football is shite and the geniuses are in short supply - i am struggling to think of one.

Whoever wins out of City and Woolwich, there isn’t a single player there with true wow factor. Haaland is the closest because of his athleticism. Foden has had all the fun coached out of him and Doku is going down a similar path - Semenyo will go the same way.

It needs to come back and we need to stop with chasing wingers. How many wingers out there consistently deliver? Be it goals, assists, or even regular good performances?

Lamal, Olisie, Kvara, are the exceptions. Saka is seen as a world class player - how often does he score or assist? Gordon would be welcomed here. Why? Rafa Leao can’t perform twice in a row. We signed Kudus and he’s frustrated more than he’s performed.

To me, wingers are a nightmare. The weakest position in football and the vast majority of players get away with not contributing the goals and assists we need them to. Not great to have two of your three attacking players not bothering the opposition keeper.

He was our top scorer last season and I’m sure as shit he would have been this season given a chance.

This is the problem with the game currently - the striker has to be some hulking bloke who presses like crazy, holds it up and can compete aerially - doesn’t sound like Jermaine Defoe does it, but I’d have him over any forward we have at the club currently.

For me it’s simple, these players aren’t wrong, the game is just shit at the moment. Set pieces, long throws, loads of movement and technical play - but few strikers worth their salt at the most important element. It’s wank

Doesn’t sound like Greavsie either our greatest ever striker !

I'm a Spurs fan

Johnson moving on and so far delivering nothing means sh!t to me.

We bag some money for a goalscorer and have done what?

How many examples of incompetence do we need to see?

Fcuk sake, at least use the money to pay off Fearful Frank if you can't find an attacker.

It's bo!!ocks

It’s crazy, modern full backs are expected to attack more than wingers. Wingers or “wide forwards” prime role is to press now and try and contain the attacking full backs.

Wingers are dead in the modern game - putting crosses into the box is almost derided these days. Very few go to the byline anymore, it’s all inverted, cutting in to a congested area.

In the next couple of decades some footballing genius will come along and invent 4-4-2 again

I couldn't believe the mass whinging by the fanbase about selling that utter donkey when we did. It was so so obvious the guy is a truly terrible footballer, yet people acted like it was a mistake to sell him. Mental. We actually got so lucky we had a PL club come in for him with a decent offer. I honestly thought we'd be stuck with him for years.

Absolutely shocking and tells so much about our fans.
Though I assume part of the whining comes from the fact that we sold a player but did not reinvest the money to make the same position stronger.

That being said-

This season all competitions:
Wilson Odobert (feshly 21) - 2 goals, 5 assists with 1447 minutes. Contribution for every 206 minutes.
Brennan Johnson (soon 25) - 4 goals, 0 assists with 1258 minutes. Contribution for every 314 minutes.

So there is a 3,5 years younger player that can actually also dribble pass... who also contributes to actual goals and assists.
We all know who has bigger potential.

Football has always been a game of space, and right now the space is out wide — that’s why full-backs have become so important.

Most teams defend in compact mid-blocks with wingers dropping back to support which clogs the middle and leaves the wide areas free for full-backs to exploit.

It works in cycles, you're right in saying that 4-4-2 will come back at some point, that's how football has always been, everyone is search for the meta that gets copied to death and then onto the next one.
