I see this with youth football at grass roots and academy at the moment. There is an obsession with 1 v 1 duels, passing and control. Little to no shooting practice - no one gives a shit about scoring at youth level. As I have said previously, I blame Pep for this bollocks.

For all of BJs flaws, he had ice in his veins in front of goal and with us not strengthening in attacking areas we could very well miss that between now and May

I’m not a football coach but you’d play Johnson as a striker lol. It maximises his strengths - finishing and impulsive shooting - and negates a lot of his weakness - that’s he’s fucking shit at everything else.

He’s fast and can score. He cannot create, pass or defend.

Maximises his strengths lol allow it, much more to being a striker than just popping up in the box and scoring tap ins

Back to goal play non existent, strength crap, first touch horrible, never seen him head the ball and he pulls out of 50/50s

Honestly he'd be the worst striker you could ever imagine.

He was our top scorer last season and I’m sure as shit he would have been this season given a chance.

This is the problem with the game currently - the striker has to be some hulking bloke who presses like crazy, holds it up and can compete aerially - doesn’t sound like Jermaine Defoe does it, but I’d have him over any forward we have at the club currently.

For me it’s simple, these players aren’t wrong, the game is just shit at the moment. Set pieces, long throws, loads of movement and technical play - but few strikers worth their salt at the most important element. It’s wank

Bro just think about what you're saying for a min.

Johnson has 0 strength and he cannot hold the ball up, they are 2 of the most basic fundamentals that a striker needs to posses first and foremost.

Johnson is nothing like Defoe in that regard and Defoe flourished in a 2 man striker system regardless.

And yet he scored a huge amount of goals in a short space of time.

I’m not saying he’s a revelation, he’s one of the shittest players I’ve seen in my life at this level but there are elements he does well at.

Yes playing off the striker or ghosting into the box, it's a massively different skillset to playing as an actual striker.
 
This touches on my issue with Xavi - technically a lovely player but the difference between his technical ability and effectiveness in an actual game is vast - he just doesn’t change games and it’s mostly down to him having the athleticism of a depressed sloth.

Instead, he had the nose for a goal and the finishing ability to take those chances. This is what I’m saying though - the modern striker seemingly has to be good at everything bar actually scoring - it’s bizarre. It’s why you have Jokeres, Sesko, Solanke and Richy going for big money whilst posting ridiculously shit stats - these lads would have been nicknamed the judge back in the 90’s for riding the bench so much

Look at the goals he scored, a lot of them he ghosted into the box, unmarked because his strength is finding space in the box and timing his runs, strikers don't get that kind of space in the box as they're normally always marked by the CB's

But theres much more to being a striker than just scoring goals, what happens when your team is under pressure and need a focal point to relieve pressure, Johnson isn't strong enough to do that, imagine him playing with his back to goal against a 6'4 CB lol the ball is only going to come back...then you have his general all round play which just isn't good enough, don't expect him to do anything with the ball when he has it.

Strikers aren't as prolific as they werr but they have to do much more these days than just loiter around the box and finish chances, that's modern football.

I agree, he couldn’t be the 1 ma up top on his own that modern football is obsessed with currently. He would have been a very successful player in the 90’s though as part of a 2 man partnership.

Football is not better for this 1 player up top 10 goals a season but plenty of running bollocks - it’s why Woolwich top the league but don’t score from open play and don’t score through their attacking players and we’ve decided to copy that model for some ridiculous reason - it’s disgusting
