Player Djed Spence

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

This is a good post, concentrating solely on the evidence, or lack of it, and that wider subjective view that sometimes seems at odds with the facts.

In other words, it's hard to understand how Spence is being picked for Englsnd or Romero being picked for us, but clearly both are.

I think it says more about the perceived or evident quality of the options.

Spence gets picked for England because when he was in form he got selected and did quite well. He’s also a Tuchel type in that he’s more defensive than offensive and Tuchel likes athletic players. He can also play both sides which again, Tuchel fucking loves versatility.

I don’t think he will make the final squad though.

This is where my self doubt that I know nothing about this sport kicks in.

I think Spence has been shite all season, yet highly paid managers pick him.
I think Romero is a fine player, but he’s been shite all season, yet, picked whenever available, both for us and his national side.
VDV? The same? Porro? Yep. Solanke? Fuck aye. RKM is now in the French squad.

And I’m not convinced I’m the only one questioning the ability and strength of mind of these players, yet, they play when they are available. Do we all just not know anything? Are there subtle signs we miss? Are managers just lazy cunts and don’t want to change their sides?

It's very hard to be a good, consistent, player in a bad, inconsistent, team.

Spence is a decent player with some good individual traits (speed, 1v1 defending) and good versatility (can play either rb/lb) - this makes him useful to managers. He'd be perfectly fine rotation option in a good team. He's just playing in an awful team right now.

Even if you don't think he's good enough that's fine. Everyone has an opinion about a player's ability. What I'm objecting to is the nasty and completely unfounded slurs about his character from the usual suspects on this forum. You don't go from the football scrap heap to playing for England in two years without having something about you.

Not really seen a lot on here that I’d class as overt racism.

Spence takes selfies whilst chomping on cigars. Gets interviews whilst wearing sunglasses throughout. Posted memes of himself and opponents when he was playing well. Does seem to have a wannabe gangster vibe.

Never seen Sarr do any of these things. Never seen him referred to as a wannabe gangster either. They share a skin colour though.

Think folk are reading too much into this.

100%. it's almost as if some people on this forum go looking for reasons to virtue signal on here
:mourshock:

I've seen the exact same questions about his character put against van de ven and romero and no one was suggesting it was their ethnicity then

I'm not getting into a debate about racism on a forum that is mostly dedicated to football, but overt would be most unlikely, because that would necessitate some kind of intervention from admin.

As long as posters stick to character analysis and football, without moving towards some kind of relationship to stereotypes then all good with me.

I don't personally care what any player does off the pitch (within the boundaries of course), if they are performing consistently.

Not one of our players has done that this season, and on that basis alone, I would rather they all kept a low profile. But that's just me.

Lots of the Spence stuff on here is racial. If you don't believe that you're either unaware of the society you're living in, willfully ignorant or directly contributing.
Cultural more than racial imo. It’s clear a lot of posters aren’t really from the same peer group as Spence and probably don’t understand the sort of street culture a young black male like Spence might be influenced by. Being a millionaire footballer doesn’t separate you from the man dem.

revolting! cant wait till hes bombed out the club. having to be told to pull your bottoms up over your arse at 25 is beyond embarrassing. no wonder we are in a relegation fight with shit like this in the changing room.

I don't think it was the singing tbh, others weren't singing and many footballers don't sing the NA at games and hardly move their lips.

Djed didn't have to go with the gum tho.

That what tipped it, I think.

And didn't sit right with me and seemed unnecessary.

If you're gonna chill and keep it calm just do that.

Don't give the press something to spotlight, single out and feed off of

Not smart.

And was just a bit off.

Didn't like it.

And Charles can go fuck himself btw.

It's more about the country and the hopes of the nation you play for.

But it did make Djed stand out and it did come across as obnoxious.

And can understand it being taken that way.

Though some used it for their own agendas, unfortunately (predictably).

He likely isn't the first to do it, but whatever the case, the press here will jump on that all day long.

Of course it would look better if they all sang and looked engaged, but players not signing the national anthem is nothing new.

Whether it’s because they’re focused or don’t know the blooming words, it’s nothing but a storm in a tea cup and the usual social media blow up over nothing.

As long as the social media morons, as I won't call it for what it is, make the same noises for all players who don't openly sing the national anthem then okay

We can hide behind the truth about many things as much as want but there is a stark reality that is only just below the surface here.

We don't live in a cave.

is it possible the anthem "god save our king" etc is problematic for islamic folk?

Wasn't sure if the nomenclature provides an issue

(IIRC he's the first muslim to play for england, right?)
