Hate to break it to you, but whilst we operate with a Technical/Sporting Director model - every signing is a club signing!
I think there are club signings and club signings though.

At a club like Chelsea, in recent years, I think the manager has basically had little to zero say in transfers. Wouldn't be surprised if on some occasions the manager didn't even know certain deals were being completed at all. The coach was expected to solely coach and work with the players he was given.

But at other clubs with the sporting director model, like Liverpool for instance, Klopp was hugely involved in transfer decisions and would be working closely with the recruitment team, giving his opinion, etc. There was more of a back and forth, and wouldn't be surprised if the manager could even veto deals he really didn't want in that case.

And critically under Boehly managers aren't even being listened to in terms of what the shape of the squad should be. They just buy and sell whatever they think are good deals for the books and then sort it out as they go with loans.

Even Levy wasn't that bad. Chelsea spend to their PSR ceiling of course, but it's totally aimlessly, it's so stupid.

Disagree. The Sporting Director role evolved a lot during Klopp’s tenure. You can see that by the end and I suspect is a big reason he got ‘tired’. He wasn’t involved at all by the end.

Also disagree. By my understanding Klopp actually took on far more control of transfers towards the end and that's what wore him out. Michael Edwards left in 2022 and Klopp was far more actively involved in recruitment from that point on, leading to burnout. Think some of the failed transfers like Nunez were guys Klopp specifically wanted IIRC.

I think he was almost a traditional manager calling all the shots by the time he left.

Nahhh, Ward came in later and brought Nunez and Diaz etc and then it was Schmadtke who was brought in to do that midfield overhaul when Fabinho, Henderson, Keita etc all left. It was literally his short term brief to overhaul the midfield.

It was reported by Ornstein and widely discussed at the time that Klopp had increased control over transfers during that period, stepping into the vaccum left by Edwards. Certainly in that particular summer. Pretty sure any knowledgeable Liverpool fans would back me up on that.

But regardless my point stands. Clubs with sporting director models aren't all the same. They don't all sideline the coach - in many cases the coach still has a crucial say and impact over who comes in.

To use Chelsea as an example yet again. They've just appointed Alonso as manager rather than coach and have presumably given him far more say and influence over transfers than his predecessors to get him to join. But they still, on paper, have a sporting director model. I imagine it will be pretty similar for De Zerbi at Spurs given how desperate we were to bring him in. It was widely reported we were giving him more control than the average coach.

Why are there AI pictures circulating of him already signing ...
I mean what's the point?
He's GONNA sign, he just hasn't YET!

I genuinely don't think we need to have an AIndy Robertson photo of him in a Spurs Shirt signing imagaiary paipers to visualise what it might look like when he does!

It's stoopid!

Past his peak. His legs have gone. Ok as Back up but nothing more.
A Good pro & probably good to have around the youngsters.

If the plan is to get rid of Udogie (at last!), loan out Souza (ideally Prem or Champo), make Micky the starting LB and have Robbo act as his deputy & mentor...then I'm game.

This club defo needs some proper leadership & winning know-how anyway.

On paper it’s brilliant signing.

Talented and experienced but it will mean fuck all of his legs are gone. Hopefully his body has 2-3 years of prem level left and he will great for us. If he has gone through what Son went through his impact will be limited. Just hoping Liverpool didn’t let go because of decline but because he just fell out with Slot.
