I'm really not sure how De Zerbi sets up the team. Is it 4-2-3-1 or is it more of a 4-3-3.
What in asking, is he using a double Pivot?

He tinkers a fair bit, but generally a double pivot

They drop deep in build up to make a box with the CBs and offer out balls/progression

Full backs generally pushing up a bit

Left side of this one

Big thing is that the CMs are often recieving the ball facing goal or on the half turn*, hence the bounce passes so the next player recieves facing play

Theres a reason RDZ had Palhinha and Porro rotating, Palhinha isnt comfortable in those positions/situations, nor those inside/attacking spaces when we advance - Porro is. And Palhinha was perectly useful covering RB.

If we had Wharton there, he would need to be very comfortable turning and finding some space - if he is he could be key - but I think he'd also just become a target...

*watched some videos of Baleba, to see what the fuss is all about. Not really sure I see it, tbh, but one major strength of his was clearly taking the ball on the turn and getting away from players

No I don't need to use a computer based on simulated thinking to randomly guess a player's injury in order to create a doomsday scenario and have a meltdown over it.
Youre a weird cat you know that?

Whether you understand AI or not, we’ve seen first hand how long it took Bentancur, Maddison and Udogie to come back from ACL and Quad surgery. We still haven’t seen any of them able to play peak levels for 90 min every week again

Kudus, Odobert, Simons, Kulusevski are out for most of next season and don’t expect them at their best.

They all basically need to be replaced

Obviously but how the hell you're able to determine a recovery period using some AI is beyond me, I'm not the weird one here.

Another one to add to the mix?

Only been there a season, so not like he worked with RDZ, but ex-Brighton gets people excited...

and he is ex Woolwich - Vinai will love that!

EDIT

Jason Ayto has left Brighton & Hove Albion after just nine months as sporting director.
Ayto became the club’s first sporting director in September 2025 in a revamp of senior roles. The 41-year-old replaced technical director David Weir, who now holds that position at Strasbourg.
Ayto previously worked at Woolwich for over a decade in a variety of positions, including assistant technical director and interim sporting director.
Brighton chairman Tony Bloom said in a statement on Wednesday: “I’d like to thank Jason for everything he has done for us, and to wish him well for the future.”

Ayto was due to oversee his first summer transfer window, working with Mike Cave on Brighton’s transfer business. Cave was promoted from assistant technical director to technical director when Weir left and Ayto arrived.
Cave will oversee all sporting areas of the club, working with the existing senior team and reporting to chief executive Paul Barber. The summer window opens on June 15.
Ayto left Woolwich last summer after 11 years at the club, having previously worked as a scout, and subsequently the north London club’s chief scout.
The Athletic reported that Ayto had been a strong contender for the permanent position at Woolwich, but former Atletico Madrid executive Andrea Berta was ultimately appointed in the role.

"I’d like to thank Jason for everything he has done for us, and to wish him well for the future." - never a great endorsement when its a one liner

I don’t dislike the guy like some on here but Gallagher in January really screwed over the squad balance. We’ve been crying out for a passing midfielder for years now, why we decided to buy an upgrade on the type of player we already have plenty of is beyond me.

We’ve got so many holes it’ll be interesting to see what they address, and how urgently. Guaranteed the window will close with us still being short in numerous positions.

Gallagher in January was due to the fact he was the best available CM - although not what we wanted as his only real strength was insane pressing high up the pitch, most other attributes very average which is why Chelsea sold him.

One attraction was that with our AM's becoming unlikely to play much part in 2nd half of the season, he was a candidate (albeit very weak) to paper over that crack.

Not sure we can afford to offload him this summer but I think he goes next summer as we need to upgrade him.

I think Chelsea sold him as it was the most beneficial sale for FFP reasons, being homegrown

Poch was well against it, and I suspect that played a part in him leaving

And just an observation, is he really a CM? He seems at his best in that #10, not deeper. Kind of unorthodox, because he isnt a proper 10, he's not a Maddison for example, but thats where his best football is played...

Vinai reading that:

Ex-Brighton
Ex-Woolwich
Now unemployed

Without skimping on quality you'd be talking about a 500m+ window.

You're just farming your own anger as usual.

Romero, Vicario, Sarr/Bentancur generate about 100m of that. Another 10m of that from Dragusin

Then were talking about the aggression Liverpool showed in the market last year. ENIC have the resources to do the same if they mean the PR guff they just put out after finishing 17th

AI Is absolutely able to provide a pretty good approximation based on historical treatment of quad injuries

You one of those AI luddites?

Historic treatment of Kudus type injuries :

1 Its perfectly possible with luck he's back at start of preseason
2 Its perfectly possible with less luck he's back in August/September
3 Its peffectly possible if he's unlucky he's back Nov/Dec

I think we get an update when a preseason squad is announced which might confirm (1) or (2) but if it doesn't ..... start to worry it might be (3).

I've just changed my name by deed poll to Andy Irvine - AI to my friends !

Unlike Cowbell, you can definitely have too much ex-goonage.

If anyone doesn't know about Cowbell, you should immediately go and look up "more cowbell"

It can assess a virtually endless amount of similar cases and deduce from there the usual sort of recovery time

It can never be specific to an individual, but even so - I dont see the issue with what its saying here as a reasonable proxy/guide

If AI existed in the covid era it would have told you it was a deadly virus, stay inside and keep on social distancing.

I don't think we need to use it just because we feel a bit doomy gloomy, you can practically create a narrative out of anything by mis-using it.

Furthermore that tweet posted up was from an assessment in March when he had his surgery, if you're gonna go by AI's analysis and if you're glass half full, 6 months from Match is September - a few weeks after the season starts.
